Art Dealer's vault combination before Slackjaw asks for it?
Just a heads up to anyone doing Mission 3: House of Pleasure, don't interrogate the Art Dealer before Slackjaw asks you to or else he won't give you the key to the Captain's Hotel and the game will lock you out of a bonecharm.

I know it's just a bonecharm and that it's stupid to complain during a free weekend, but really? This is the same glitch that's in every nonlinear game ever. "Don't get thing before person asks you to or else". It PLAGUED Skyrim in the early months, it seems to be in every game I play now. Why is it so hard to account for that? The game even has the balls to stop the game and tell you how many different ways you can go about completing your objectives when you first enter the Golden Cat. Anyway, just make sure you get the vault combination from the Art Dealer AFTER Slackjaw asks you to, if you're going for the nonlethal alternative to House of Pleasure.

But it's kinda logical, if you can just enter the bathouse without any help.....why would he need to give you the key to this hotel? He's somewhat of a trader: if you can get it for free (here, the entrance), well, why bother trying to sell you something?
But then again, that might be just me, hopefully, later on, you'll enjoy the game as i did.

Regardless of whatever reasoning you want to try to come up with, he TELLS YOU that he's giving you the key whether you already have the vault combination or not. The glitch is just that you never receive it. There's no logic behind it, it's just a glitch. I am enjoying the game, quite a lot actually, but I'm just getting so sick of seeing this glitch in every game. Why does no one ever prepare for the event that a player gets something before they're supposed to? It's GOING to happen to someone, and it WILL screw something up. Ugh.

He doesn't give you the key in exchange for the combination. He gives you the key in exchange for an audiograph from Galvani's Residence. What he gives you in exchange for the safe combination is taking care of the Pendleton Brothers in a non-lethal fashion. Maybe you misunderstood what he was saying? Seems like you came here to complain before/instead of consulting a walkthrough, which would have told you that the combination has nothing to do with the key.

It's amazing that you would complaing about something like this since Dishonored is far better about "sequence breaking" than any other game these days. You find one "glitch" (which you are attributing to an incorrect cause, so you may still be able to get the key) and it's just the worst thing ever? This is the only problem like this I've ever heard of, and like I said, your misattribution may mean you can still attain it.

I didn't come here to complain, I came here to warn people about making a mistake myself and a lot of other people on the internet have made that they decided to never patch. He gives you the key after getting him the Informant's audiograph, and then asks you to get him the Art Dealer's combination if you want to deal with the Pendleton's nonlethally (which is how I'm playing, and I already had it, so why would I say no?) which prompts him to skip giving you the key and go straight to shipping them off to the mine. I'm only mentioning it because before this mission they stop you and tell you how many different ways there are to complete your mission. Like, they stop you from playing the game to brag about it, and then they screw it up. It's not like there's really that many different deviations for them to account for. There's barely a sequence to break. It's almost funny.

I'm not acting like this is the worst thing ever. It's a fun game and I'm enjoying it, but it's a flaw nontheless, a stupid and common one at that that I'm getting tired of seeing.

There is no glitch. Nothing is ever locked out. There are different ways to get to everything in this game.

How do you get the bonecharm in the Captain's Hotel when Slackjaw fails to give you the key and both doors into the area require the key?

Get the audiograph. As far as you've said, you didn't give him the audiograph. Your last post wasn't very clear as to the progression of events.

I've got the audiograph. I've given him the audiograph. It's still glitched in my journal to say that I have to give it to him, even though I did. How could I have given him the combination to the vault and had the twins shipped off to the mines otherwise? Discussing this further is pointless. I've looked it up, it's a known glitch, there's no solution other than to go back a few hours in your saves and don't do it that way. I'm just warning other people to be careful if they care about bonecharms or achievements.

Okay, I just wanted to cover all the bases to make sure it actually was a glitch. As far as I know, it's the only one of its kind in the game, so there's that.

I know, and thank you for trying to help me out. There are pretty few glitches, and like I said it is a very fun game. It just sucks seeing this same type of glitch one way or another in every nonlinear game. Makes me hesitant about exploring or trying new things, which is not a feeling you want to have.
