Have you played KoD? you get a different idea about them after playing the first mission.

Knife of Dunwall, and the Brigmore Witches, the dlc.

Yeah they're very different from earth whales, that's for sure.

However if you finish the DLC, and then move on to the second game and Death of the Outsider... you'll have a much better picture of them. (( they are significantly more important than just a power source, particularly if you pay attention to one of the Outsider's comments in DotO... ))

I've finished it fully and am nearly at the final mission of my second run, dude. GET WITH THE PROGRAM.

Re the original post I find the entire thing about the whales to be incredibly creepy - but not for the whales themselves. Despite all the subtleties in the game there is one aspect that is glaring, brutal and in-your-face; and that is the use of Dunwall as an analog of our modern-day oil-based society. (I'm wondering if anyone else has caught the repeated Pratchett references - or even if it's just co-incidence and there's no real reference at all. If not it's an irony Sir Terry would have gleefully enjoyed.)

Dunwall is a society beautiful on the surface (before the plague) but which runs entirely on horrible cruelty. Since that cruelty is what provides the fundamental fuel of that society it's passed off, ignored. Celebrated - while the awful realities are studiously avoided.

Sounds pretty familiar, if you ask me. Speaking as an author, while I am always impressed with subtlety I'm even more impressed when the velvet glove suddenly comes off and the writer's hard fist smashes right into your nose; making a point to superb, stark effect; something Sir Terry excelled at.

Cheers!

The sequel and DotO are a pretty stark reminder that people are crap, and that class warfare is a thing.

I'd wondered why there was so much emphasis on them, but obviously, you've seen why :)
