Dishonored

Mission six: Regent dies on his own (SPOILERS)
I am (re)playing Dishonored, and just finished Mission 6, where you return to the tower to kill/neutralise the Lord Regent.

I have done this mission a few times now, and for the first time, something odd happened. Since I am going low chaos, I used the audiograph and the regent was arrested. It was one of the first things I did. A short while later, while using Dark Vision, I notice a body a few floors down - odd, since I hadn't passed that way yet so no one was pacified and dumped somewhere.

Eventually, I make my way down to the level (the one above the torturer), and notice that the two guards in the corridor keep walking past a body. After choking them out, I go up close and it turns out it's the Lord Regent, lying dead. The guards had been walking past him like he wasn't even there.

He was arrested and taken away by the guards, so how did he end up dead on the floor? What, he tripped and broke his neck and the guards decided to pretend they didn't notice?

I have done this low chaos mission resolution a few times and he never ended up dead on the floor. Has this happened to anyone?

ETA: before posting this, I did a Google search but came up empty. I tried again after posting this, and found this on a fandom wiki, which is what I think happened:

"After the non-lethal elimination of Burrows, if Corvo kills or renders a nearby guard unconscious or is detected, the Lord Regent will attempt to flee the guards. If he survives, he can be found in the basement if Corvo goes after the Torturer."

Soon after the Regent was arrested, the guards suddenly went on alert, which was odd as no one saw me or tried to come after me (I was hiding on a chandelier). Doesn't matter how, but I guess the Lord Regent tried to run and was killed.

It does sound like a failed attempt to run to the torturer's (which he will do if you disrupt the arrest in some way) but this is the first time I've heard of it failing like this. Where did the arrest happen? Usually it happens in the hallway between the main structure and the tower the broadcast station is in.

The arrest happened in the usual spot, in that corridor connecting the Regent's room and the broadcast tower. He was led into his room by the guards and I quickly blinked onto the chandelier. Less than a minute later, I heard a guard saying he was going to find me and on Dark Vision, I saw him pacing in this Regent's room. Guess the Regent made a run for it during that time and died on the way to the torturer.

Same thing happened on my first playthrough. After he got arrested (in the usual spot), I blinked up to the chandelier in the big front lobby, and waited to watch them escort him out of the level. When they got to the staircase in the lobby, he suddenly broke away and ran like he was trying to escape, and they shot him. None of them ever spotted me before or after, so I dunno what triggers it.

On retrying the level, I found this always happens, no matter where I am, or how stealthy. I could be hiding in a closet on the other side of the building, never spotted, and it still goes down like that.

Only way I found to prevent it was to exit back out to the courtyard before they make their way to the lobby. That way he's still alive and in custody when the interior map unloads.

The thing that seems to be constant between both of your methods is blinking up onto the chandelier to see them take him away. I usually pay more attention to looting as much as possible from the castle and don't bother with what they do to him or if I disrupt the arrest I do it in the hallway and he gets away to the torturer's. Thinking of doing the mission again now to see if I can get this to happen.

Yes, usually I hide away in the corridor or the broadcast tower and wait a while until I start moving around again. This time, since I have done this mission several times, I thought I would fast-track things a bit and quickly move above their heads while they were still leading him away, so that I could take out the overseer and his dog when they were out of eyesight. But before I could even do that, a guard started yelling that he was going to find me, even though there hadn't been an alert (at least, there was no alert sound as normal).

I guess moving close to the Regent as they are arresting him seems to be interpreted by the game as an attempt to interfere so he makes a run for it. Interesting, I've played this game several times and often still encounter new things.

No. As I said in my first post, had you bothered to read past the first sentence, I've tried it multiple ways, and it always happens no matter where I am in the level. I can be on the literal opposite side of the map and he still dies in the lobby. I don't see it happen, but if I hide, wait, and come back, his corpse will be in the lobby. Only thing I found that prevents it is to leave the interior map before he and his escort reach the lobby.

I did miss that you mentioned further attempts, mea culpa, however I have never seen this happen and I have to ask if these re-tries were on the same save, as the game could have already rolled the RNG to see if the regent survives his escape from arrest (much like the fact that there is a 75-80% chance of Curnow escaping the office of the high overseer if you disrupt Campbell trying to kill him).

I had no idea there were RNG elements like that in the game. Seems weird, but if true that would likely explain it.
