Dishonored

What kind of world/theme in Dishonored?
I don't know what's the perfect word for the title but as mentioned above, what is it? Is it a Steampunk/Victorian/Gothic or others? I'm really curious and interested to know since I really love the outfits, themes and the art style in this game...

Thanks for the help :D

I think I'd say more industrial teslapunk if I had to pigeonhole it?

Everything's explicitly electricity-based, and the technological aesthetic is much more about heavy industry (and the accompanying grime) than the intricate clockwork that defines steampunk. The Clockwork Mansion from Dishonored 2 is the exception, not the rule.

Victorian England was definitely an influence, but that era ended at the turn of the 20th century, and Dishonored's historical reference pool extends well beyond that (and beyond England). Dunwall is heavily based on historical London, but there's a hefty scoop of Gilded Age America in there as well. The style of the ingame paintings (especially the non-protrait ones) and the lighting in the game remind me a lot of American realists specifically.

It's tough to pin down exactly because it's a fantasy world and not a period piece, so there are a lot of weird anachronisms just because science and the arts didn't proceed in that universe along the same course that it did in ours (or because of oversights, or "because cool"). Notably: The Isles have an abundance of brilliant mechnical and electrical engineers, a few solid biologists/medical doctors, and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ for chemists. There's a CRT TV and mass communications networks, but they don't seem to have any plastics, and photography isn't invented until dishonored 2! (and that game reaches even farther for architectural references, though not as much as I'd like in other directions, given the change in geography)

I guess that's one reason I like it so much, there are obvious connections to draw, but it's not quite like anything else.

@chickadeedeedee Wow didn't expect this kind of deep explanation from a person :D Really enjoyed reading your writing and explanation since its the first time I heard the word industrial teslapunk (had to google it too xD) .Can't imagine how Dishonored 2 would look like if this one already looking great and impressed me.I mean the art style, outfits and the world setting really blows my mind away.

Thanks for the info and the knowledge :D

I know this is an old threaat, but this is my opinion. As stated in wikipedia, "Dishonored's mood was partly inspired by the works of nineteenth-century artist John Atkinson Grimshaw, depicting London at night". The link : en wikipedia org/wiki/Dishonored#Design (add ".")

EDIT : Not so old I guess, lol

I've heard of Dishonored described (humorously) as "Whalepunk". I will say that I has definitely influenced my own art direction in the stories I've created. To be honest, all the plots I've written with the intention of making a possible video game out of them is now heavily influenced by the Steampunk-ish genre. Even one of my post-modern (read: futuristic) developments has a Steampunk theme if you were to imagine it persisting into the modern era and beyond -- without being Technopunk/Cyberpunk. I love designing the dark, gritty, almost depressing themes of that series with strange elements of eerie beauty to it as well. Thank you, Dishonored and, for the most part, Victor Antonov, the art director (or major designer, at least) of the game.

@Mr.Falconscript Wait what?! Did you somehow involved in the making of the Dishonored series?
Mr.Falconscript 2017 年 1 月 24 日 下午 8:25
No, I said Dishonored inspired the art design direction in my own works and concept art.

It's more like what would be known as a telefractal subvergent world, with a type 3 standard of living and features a healthy chuck of politicial diatribe. Being a telefractal subvergent world at its core, it tends to mix grandness together with dated function, yet retains a certain degree of futurist fundamentals.

Well, yes. It influences my *own* projects. I didn't have anything to do with the design of Dishonored itself. I wish. lol

He's being unnecessarily sarcastic and facetious. It's called spam in a way. ;)
