random kills at mission stats?
I don't get what is up with this game. Every single mission I always do the non-lethal sleeper hold takedown thing and I always take care of targets the optional non-lethal way but at the end of every mission I always have a random kill or two. I wish this game was like Styx or the new Hitman and would immediatly tell you when you screw something up as opposed to having to wait till the end mission screen. Now I'm not so sure if I want to go for 100% if I am going to have to arbitrarly replay levels until the stat screen doesn't get mad at me.

Just make sure bodies don't fall down stairs or off of roofs.

Yeah they can't wind up sliding anywhere off a roof, down stairwells (though they CAN survive, sometimes they don't), or into water. Sometimes too, a random bullet if you're getting shot at can wind up killing someone you've already knocked out.

You apparently are having "unintentional kills". You have to be careful what you do with unconscious bodies, or they will die and it will be counted on your end of mission stat screen as a kill.

To avoid an unintentional kill in the first mission do not put an unconscious guard's body in the bin near the door where the explosives are placed. The explosion will kill him and it will count as a kill against you (its seen as your fault since you knocked him unconscious so he couldn't get out of the bin before the explosion, or just your fault for putting him in there in the first place.)

Generally to avoid unintentional kills:

Do not place unconscious bodies near ledges, balconies or near the edge of a roof. If the body falls off and either lands in water and drowns or hits the ground hard enough to cause fatal injury it will be counted as a kill against you.

Do not let bodies slide down stairs. It can cause fatal injury, so its better to put them in a safe place. Do not put bodies near heat sources or near doors that will open. They can get fatally burned or the door can cause fatal injury.

@ snake angel
You're advise is spot on as usual but, I have a question about this...

Are you referring to the dumpster at the right of the exploding blast door, or the kennel with the open front, at the left side? If you mean the dumpster, then you're right. Even with the cover closed, guards will usually be killed, although they can sometimes survive. However, an unconscious body placed in the kennel container on the left, will always be safe from harm.

It seems odd that a guard will be killed in the dumpster with the lid closed yet, an open containter, closer to the bomb, is safe. The devs were rather devious in this regard. :/

The dumpster at the right of the exploding blast door to get out of Coldridge prison. If I'm doing a low chaos run I usually put the unconscious bodies in the metal vent thing close to the door to the control room. Its out of the range of the blast wave from the explosion and they aren't harmed. The dumpster is right next to the door where the blast wave is the strongest (I think that is the explanation anyway as to why even with the lid closed the unconscious die in there.)

Yeah. I thought that's what you meant. The dumpster is indeed a bad place to put a body. It will usually be killed, depending on which of the guards you put in it, and where in the dumpster you place him.

As for the "metal vent thing" you mentioned ... I believe that's a wolfhound kennel with an open end (note the image of a wolfhound on the side). There's another kennel just to the left of the exploding blast door, as well. Bodies won't die in that one either.

Aaahh, thanks for the info, snake_angel! I am well aware of the possibility of unintentional kills, but didn't realize the closed dumpster wouldn't protect the guard from the blast. I'm not so great at this game, even on easy, and took *forever* to get through the first mission trying not to kill anyone, and my jaw dropped when I saw the one kill on the end mission stat screen. At least now I know why.

I've also heard rats can get to your unconcious victims and cause unintentional kills if you don't put people up off the ground; is this ture? Will it still happen on completely low chaos runs, or only if you increase the chaos?

Not to worry. Natually occurring rats eating an unconscious body does NOT count as a kill against you, ever. I've tested this every which way but loose.

I had the exact same problem in The Knife of Dunwall DLC in the 2nd misson. I didnt't kill anyone but if I got someone unconsious and I left him in a good place, when I would go to the place again there was nobody to be found. My kills were of 6 but I never killed anyone nor did I left them around carelessly. Help?

Bodies disappear after a certain amount piles up.

The default is 5 bodies but, you can increase that, if you don't mind mofifying config files.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I've been a bit more attentative to what I do with knocked out people and I have yet to get a unwanted kill stat.

Also make sure not to leave them where swarms of rats can get to them. I made that mistake once on my entirely non-lethal playthrough and had to restart the mission because I only found out at the end.

Naturally occurring rat swarms eating an unconscious body does NOT count as a kill so, don't worry about that.

Must have been something else but I could have sworn this is what did it. My mistake.
