as far as radiation is concerned.. not gonna give anything away but you will find better things and ways to deal with it as you progress.
my advice is that you try to remember where the radiation hotspots are and either avoid them or run like buggery through them. if, or rather *when*, you are irradiated, take the anti rad "medicine" to get it to zero, or drink vodka (you may have to neck several bottles so try to make sure you are in a relatively safe area - fighting while hammered doesnt work out well!
oh... and save often!

For all its worth, in real life it was much worse....
In SoC and CoP you can get away easy by listening to the crackling sounds, in CS when you hear the sound its too late, you are already in the red.
