S+ rank being gatekept purely behind speed is horrible.
Who thought that was a good idea? Speedrunning for many people isn't fun and is only stressful in a bad way. Especially with how tight and difficult these times are.

S+ should've been a scoring system, taking into account speed, deaths, times hit, and maybe treasure obtained. So that if you aren't the fastest you can still get a top score by playing well.

Also the fact that if you die or want to reload, you have to quit to the main menu because otherwise your time spent isn't reset back to what it was at the time of the save. What were they thinking?

inb4 git gud

I hate speedrunning RE games for achievements, but the thing you're asking for is Mercenary mode basically. Which I've also never liked.

Mercenary mode is also gatekept behind speed. You can't just kill Ganados methodically in your own way, noooo you've gotta be super fast and efficient. Idk man, that's just not fun for me.

At least it's not like RE5 merc where you've gotta fist every single guy for time extension. I don't like fisting zeds all the time, I much prefer pouring lead into zeds.

In RE2/3, I saved the harder stuff for last and played the way I wanted too at first and went through about 3 playthroughs before getting to hardcore then to extreme. This time, I'm speedrunning my 2nd playthrough on hardcore then straight to professional. I enjoy getting all the achievements and I wanna get those annoyingly hard ones out of the way first

Look up Skips on chapters. Ez S rank.

Why do you care so much?

There's no "gatekeeping". No content is hidden. All it is in a achievement saying you were talented enough to accomplish it AND put in the work to get it. If one or the other of those things is not true, then you don't deserve the achievement.

I just can't do it, not on hardcore or pro. I could possible do standard but it would be too stressful. I was screwing around in pro and I just don't see how it's possible to beat it on a first playthrough with 15 or less saves. Even with chicken hat. There's too many enemies, you can't run past many of them because then they swarm you while you're trying to solve puzzles. It sucks.

RE8 mercenary mode was the worst experience ever. Getting those highest ranks basically meant memorizing an entire level, memorizing the order you shoot each enemy, memorizing every aspect of the strategy to just barely cross the threshold. I still haven't even tried the DLC for that merc mode yet. It haunts my dreams.

Always hated speedrunning in Resident Evil. It's simply not fun for me even if I could do it, I have S+ in RE2 Remake for instance. Not sure if I'm going to bother with this game, still on my first playthrough (hardcore).

"No content is hidden". Except, you know, the cool costumes and their effects.

I'm willing to put the work in, it's just not everyone can speedrun. And those costumes are gatekept.

I wouldn't really call a bonus costume meaningful content. But I guess... cheat engine?

Agreed. RE8 mercenaries was less fun than the other games. Well made, intense, challenging, but not fun when trying to perform well. Memorizing isn't fun. Of course there will always be SOME memorizing aspects, but I liked the OG RE4 mercenaries, which was randomized. Randomized is good. Algorithms are good. The pure memorized way is just lazy, from the devs.

IMPORTANT:

Loading a save from the death screen will NOT reset your timer, you need to go to title screen first EVERT TIME you die, if you want to keep your time down.

I will say that infinite ammo, the Handcannon, Ashley's armor, etc. are all OP enough to justify the high difficulty requirement. OG RE4 was too easy in some ways. It needed this added challenge. Not for everyone, but it's a survival horror game. It's meant to be oppressive. The Handcannon run can be 100 hours, you just need to finish a Pro run on a fresh save no special weapons.

Give Capcom more money and maybe they'll unlock them from you.

Other wise you're just going to either have to suck it up and do it if you really want it, or don't and never have it. No one that matters cares if it's blocked behind a challenge, it's their game and their right to make it the way they see fit.

I'm not even a speed runner myself, and that's fine. I don't need those items to have fun lol.
