There's no "gatekeeping". No content is hidden. All it is in a achievement saying you were talented enough to accomplish it AND put in the work to get it. If one or the other of those things is not true, then you don't deserve the achievement.
RE8 mercenary mode was the worst experience ever. Getting those highest ranks basically meant memorizing an entire level, memorizing the order you shoot each enemy, memorizing every aspect of the strategy to just barely cross the threshold. I still haven't even tried the DLC for that merc mode yet. It haunts my dreams.
I'm willing to put the work in, it's just not everyone can speedrun. And those costumes are gatekept.
I wouldn't really call a bonus costume meaningful content. But I guess... cheat engine?
Agreed. RE8 mercenaries was less fun than the other games. Well made, intense, challenging, but not fun when trying to perform well. Memorizing isn't fun. Of course there will always be SOME memorizing aspects, but I liked the OG RE4 mercenaries, which was randomized. Randomized is good. Algorithms are good. The pure memorized way is just lazy, from the devs.
Loading a save from the death screen will NOT reset your timer, you need to go to title screen first EVERT TIME you die, if you want to keep your time down.
I will say that infinite ammo, the Handcannon, Ashley's armor, etc. are all OP enough to justify the high difficulty requirement. OG RE4 was too easy in some ways. It needed this added challenge. Not for everyone, but it's a survival horror game. It's meant to be oppressive. The Handcannon run can be 100 hours, you just need to finish a Pro run on a fresh save no special weapons.
Other wise you're just going to either have to suck it up and do it if you really want it, or don't and never have it. No one that matters cares if it's blocked behind a challenge, it's their game and their right to make it the way they see fit.
I'm not even a speed runner myself, and that's fine. I don't need those items to have fun lol.
