Red Faction 1,2 were amazing, the tech that they had was far ahead of other shooters, the way you could blow up a wall, and the destruction that you could cause was not really seen in any other game at the time. But neither game as aged well. I really enjoy playing them but this is because I liked them when they first came out and enjoy them for what they are. My children on the other hand who are playing CoDs, Battlefields, Borderlands and GTAs are not that impressed and did not like RedFaction 1,2, but loved RF:G and RF:A, they liked the open world aspect, and the destruction is much wider in its use.
You can not go wrong playing the first two, they are great games, and I really enjoyed them many years ago, but they aged poorly and there is little you will get in return for the time placed into them. Were as RF:G and RF:A they are much more modern and broader in its appeal.
Personally if you have the time, get then all, they are super cheap and enjoyable, but if limited to the time you can spend playing them, just get the modern ones, the older ones are great, but there is nothing there you have not seen done better and the plot you can catch up on watching a 10minute Youtube vid.
