Compressed Audio and It's Driving Me Nuts!
Everything said in title. The audio sounds like a game from the 'Doom era' of gaming and it's driving me nuts because I still have the Xbox 360 version and the audio sounds much better on the console version compared to the Steam version. I tried it on a different computer so it's not a hardware issue. Is there a modification for the game that can fix this or am I stuck with this horrible quality audio.

Edit: I'm using speakers in the meantime and I don't notice it as badly anymore, only if I really concentrate on it instead of the gameplay. Thanks for all the answers and help. :)

Maybe both Xbox360 version and PC version uses XACT Audio.
There's a possibility that you can importing your XBox360 version's sound file to the PC version.

Saint's Row 2 did the same thing-- it had very poorly compressed audio to try and fit the game size to retail discs. Of course, SR2 had many worse problems.

As Masamaru said, if anyone has the Xbox 360 version's audio ready, it could be patched or maybe even modded into the game.

That's what I was hoping for. If I wanted to do something like this would I need to modify my old 360 to get the files or could I use my own CD drive to get them?

Probably. I wouldn't honestly do it over something like this. I will say that using speakers helped-- because it wasn't directly in-ear, it just wasn't as noticeable.

Remember, just getting the files isn't enough-- you would still have to implement it into the game. The most we can probably hope for is that either a modder or Nordic themselves take it into their own hands to improve the audio quality. In the meantime, half of it has a radio filter anyway and the other half is part of a story that only I seem to care about.

Honestly I never considered using speakers. I'll switch hardware for now and do some research and see if I could mod it myself. I could use a project with it being summer.

I didn't mean that kind of dedication! The speakers I used are these 12-ish year old dual Logitech USB 2.0 speakers (I think they're Logitech at least, the brand faded off) that are still going strong. Surprisingly high quality for the mid-2000's, I have to say.

audio sounds fine on my pc, and i play through either a tv or pc monitor speakers.

even sounds fine on my laptop, you sure you haven't messed up your audio settings?

doesn't sound anything like "doom era" audio.

I doubt you'd hear the difference on laptop or monitor speakers.
i used to play with speakers but prefer a clear desk these days, never noticed bad audio in this game, have no idea what the op is on about???

It's much clearer if you wear decent headphones. RF:G's audio is very poorly compressed to the point where everyone speaking sounds muffled with some weird "crystally" sound (what should I call it?) to it, especially Alec and Sam (who usually aren't filtered by a radio sound).

it would be helpful if you could post a clip of the dodgy audio.

I mean... making a video of it won't help. You can hear it exactly as-is in game, there's no way I can point it out to you if you're already hearing it and saying "this is fine."

In that case, good for you. I'm glad you get to play the game without that even slightly annoying you, it's totally fine. Even then, it's a fairly minor annoyance.

what are you on? realtek, via, nvidia hd audio, creative or something else ?

just trying to think why the audio is muffled for you the op and you.
did a little search and found; (could be the issue described?)

http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/944784-red-faction-guerrilla/51325153

solution - disable surround while playing, 2.0 only.
