Does this game require a lot of APM (actions per minute), ala Starcraft?
Nowadays the term RTS can mean a whole bunch of things.....plus this game is termed as a mix of RTS and space 4x. I like 4x games but am not sure if the real-time part is the dominant part of the game.

Also, is this game competitive in nature? As in, do people mostly play this game in competitive multiplayer and (sort of) ignore the single-player portion?

Thanks for any answers.

Its more about big picture strategy. Your ships have abilities but almost all of them are able to be autocast.

1. Compared to most RTS games Sins has a very low APM requirement, nothing like Starcraft. Even in the competitive multiplayer scene, where some tactical micromanagement is required, I don't think anyone needs to practice just getting their APM up. :p It's more of learning how to counter certain abilities/strategies, general competence at executing your strategies, and being able to accurately assess the situation you're in that counts. In single player if you're playing the easier AIs you might be able to get away with having your ships fight entirely by themselves.

2. I would say most players only play either Single Player or multiplayer with friends (which is often not that competitive). The competitive multiplayer scene is there but can be a little hard to enter without any ladders or leagues, you could quite easily start next to be the best player in the game on your first competitive 5v5 game. But with some patience and willingness to lose and learn it can be pretty fun.

Good, I also had the same question and if GoaFan77 is right , then this is a good pick. I hate games that require high Actions Per Minute, which doesn't test my strategy skills as much as my quickness with mouse and keyboard.

I see.....then this doesn't sound as bad as I thought it would be, at least to me...I guess I might get it after all...

Thank you all for the explanations ;)

can you pause and give orders or is it pure real time?

Yes, you can pause and give orders, though this is typically discouraged in multiplayer, and other players can undo your pause. But in single player you can exploit it as much as you like. ;-)

Thanks. Not trying to exploit but just make rts games playable on a gaming laptop without using a mouse.

Compared to games like Starcraft 2 this game runs in slow motion. :)
