2. I would say most players only play either Single Player or multiplayer with friends (which is often not that competitive). The competitive multiplayer scene is there but can be a little hard to enter without any ladders or leagues, you could quite easily start next to be the best player in the game on your first competitive 5v5 game. But with some patience and willingness to lose and learn it can be pretty fun.

Yes, you can pause and give orders, though this is typically discouraged in multiplayer, and other players can undo your pause. But in single player you can exploit it as much as you like. ;-)
