I throw ships types in waves, typically.
Obviously, you start with Ambassador and Sabre. Your next ship is Miranda, which is cheaper and lighter than the Sabres. Coupled with their ability to harm enemy Weapons systems, they are an upgrade.
Next you have Norway which is your Siege Frigate, Steamrunner which is a "Torpedo Frigate" and the Intrepid, a "Light Command Cruiser". Norways have a lot of armor, really good phasers and they can bomb the tar out of enemy planets. Steamrunners are a longer range ship and use a blue torpedo. They might be using Quantum Torpedoes (I'll have to look). This is important because there isn't an upgrade for that weapon until Tier 8. I think Steamrunner is what you are looking for in a LR anti-ship option.
Your first really big bruiser though, is the Excelsior class Cruiser. And at 8 supply, you can pump it out to replace your Sabres at a 1 for 2 ratio.
As for Capital Ships, the Galaxy is your first Battleship, and it has the Venture refit upgrade. The Phoenix/Nebula are your support and "spellcaster" ships. In STA3 vanilla, these are NECESSARY for taking Borg Cubes and second tier Starbases. In STA3:ACTA, the lack of shields on Borg Cubes makes them a little less useful.
If you have ACTA, the ship you really want to get to is the New Orleans Class. Its a LR Torpedo cruiser that has decent armor, decent weapons and once you've cleared a system of ships you can activate its Siege mode to clear dangerous structures (like second tier Starbases) from WAY outside their range.... at 500% damage rate. Makes me miss Siege Tanks from Starcraft.
