Can also set there engagement range there with the left button :)
Other things to note....
Ships built at the system your fleet is in will auto join that fleet as they leave the shipyard.
Ships that enter that system and dont have there own fleet assigned will also auto join that fleet.
What is the benefit of the fleet? When i tried it out, it only made my ships less responsive to micro orders, clustering them into smaller groups and making them more vulnerable to aoe damage.
ou can also tell them to hold position near your planetary defences. For the clustering thing try setting the "fleet cohesion" to loose, should spread them out a bit more :)
