True 4X games are something like Stellaris, Galactic Civilizations or Endless Space.
Especially in the beginning will you be spending more time waiting for resources rather then actually doing things. But in that time your scouts should have uncovered a few planets around your planet (always start with setting your scouts to auto-scout early game and preferable build a few more) then you have time to get a closer look at the map and maybe found out where the enemy is and start planning your expansion.
Actually it is for a big proportion in that part of the game where it will be determined if you will win or lose.
Sins is one of those special games where you boot it up, start a game, and then suddenly realize 6-10 hours have passed without you noticing. It's friggin' DANGEROUS.
