its a nice learning curve.
The system doesn't do anything good, it's just there for the sake of it. It'd be okay (but still annoying) in a F2P game, but this isn't one. How does it have anything to do with learning curve? How can one learn about options they can't combo because they're missing pieces? Or they can't use them at all.
Why not have unlocks for a hero you unlocked after you unlocked them? Like you unlocked Swiggins, and then all the next item unlocks would be for Swiggins, etc. Currently, you just get random stuff. Why'd I need to be over level 100 to get an item for a character I could unlock by the time I was about level 50? Makes zero sense.
I'd be fine if you just kept the unlocks after you prestiged.
THe whole main point behind the level up system is to give new players a goal. And if they have played enough their goals, to play well is all that is needed to kep them playing. Because if you got a player to that point than he/she is occupied by new content, forum discussion and video content.
My example: I played Gotham City Imposters like crazy cause I wanted to unlock something, but unlike Awesomenauts I lost interest once my goal was gone.
also it's "useful" for prestiging. P10 means that one handicaped him/herself 10 times while playing ranked games (well, at least I did) by not having all the upgrades available to buy. i personally went P10 before the loadtout was shut down so it was even harder
Seriously, try using vinnie and Spike without Chrome File, Spike Dive is NEUTERED without it. Have fun being stuck with a lonestar that has to choose either bounce or blind on tnt because you can't get lifesteal or DOT. Froggy can't damage stack Splash Dash or have Twister Tweeters, two near essential upgrades that make him the danger he is. Good luck using Rae's snipe if Skolldir is about because you can't take Iron Rifle, and watch as your DPS on AA is terrible because two of the DPS boosting upgrades are locked out. Oh and finally, realize that Penny is at a huge disadvantage without HSB (even WITH the nerf)
Levels only punish players because they haven't played enough by giving them loadout restrictions which are often much weaker than what one would typically want or need. I've lost and won so many matches simply on the fact that a player couldn't pick an upgrade that was really needed (so many bounce+blind lonestars...)
Amen. Even if it's any good - which is highly doubtful - it does more harm than good.
You only need to go through it once, unless you wanna prestige, whereas that pain is none of Ronimo's fault, all your's.
As others have said, its incentive to continue to play, and without it, people just wouldn't.
It seems that most seasons of "Race To Prestige" (Nauts series from lvl 1 to next prestige on Youtube, Popuptwo) are about 60-70 episodes, so you would usually play about 100 matches or so before you get prestige (taking into account his skill level). When you think about it, 100 matches really isn't that much. If you stop before then, than you either reaaally didn't like the game (in which you wouldn't post here), or you just really hated going against people that counter you hard without upgrades.
Of course, a lot of these people are hard counters against you anyway, but there ARE characters that suck without upgrades, like Penny and her combos, or Vinnie's Every-Enemy-In-Cloud=1-Solar upgrade + Solar Krab for healing, Clunk's Missile Pack, or Derpl's Catsuit, but from my experience, it's not too bad your first time around because you don't know any better.
And I shall repeat myself: Prestiging is something on your head, not Ronimo.
