I know that it means you arent supposed to hold that type.
Think it only works for Highborn you are in control of city holdings.

Out of the three types of holdings (castle/temple/city). Most rulers can only hold one type (the exception being Muslim lords can have mosques as well as castles, and only get the penalty for cities). The solutions are either getting the right type of holding to be the county capital, either by building a new holding of the correct type or revoking the title of another holding of the correct type in the county, or give the county to someone else.

AAlways wondered this one, as it has sometimes not changed recently. I have only found this when something was attached to a Republic, but not Dejure

It's usually happens when you take a county held by a republic. The only solution is to revoke the county and the city from the patrician and then give the county to a vassal, as long as the county has a castle for that vassal to hold. You have to make sure to revoke the city because it will stay as a republic type otherwise. Also make sure the vassal who gets the county is a noble, not a lowborn. That way you can't screw it up and accidentally give the county to the lowborn while it's still in republic mode (the city is the main holding). A lowborn will just become the new patrician and you're in the same situation again. The county must have a castle and the city must be revoked from the patrician owner to switch the county from republic mode to barony mode.

The person birthright doesn't matter.

Switching a county is fairly simple, you must own the county capital(the county) and a sub-holding in this same county that is the type you would like to actually be the capital. To do this revoke the city / barony / church from the sub holding owner after you get the capital of the county, or build the proper one and sit on the province for two years.

Step1: give the SUB holding of the type you want to be the new capital to any character with no holdings at all, he doesn't need to be highborn or royalty or anything, all that matters is the order in which he gains land, he must be landless or already the type of ruler you want the county to be. Remember the ORDER he is given the titles is everything.
Step2: now give this same new vassal the county capital, it will auto switch the holdings around so the proper type is on top. Your new vassal will make a vassal of the correct type to hold the one he isn't supposed to have now.

I like to make church dukes to rule my realm because they are much easier to please then feudal lords AND pay taxes(If you are christian you have to make them like you more then the pope but usually with free investiture and minimial church levies they do).

I have started experimenting with patrician vassals but they pay only half of city taxes and can barely even make trade posts at the early game. City vassals of count tier or higher also have a large opinion malus of -30 which church vassals do not get.

On a side note the easiest way, or well the best time, to change a county type is after a holy war or a invasion, the type of cb that gives you literally everything including sub-holdings. Else you need to revoke which makes your vassals hate you or use the independence trick which sometimes you cannot use.

ive been doing the church vassals trick since i started playing. once im at the empire level and have all the levies ill ever need all i care about is money because hey you can never have too much money and with free investiture you can even CHOOSE who inherits the duchies/counties so you can intentionally stack your vassals with people who already love you. you can even get away with upping the taxes and still have 100 opinion with them all if you have a lot of good traits like kind charitable chaste etc.
