Can someone please explain "Wrong Type of Holding in Demesne" to me :(
And how I can change this...?

Long story short, I was ruling as the king of Ireland but my character had terrible traits and was hated by everyone and was eventually excommunicated, making everyone hate me more.

To lift the excommunication I gifted the Pope a county (Connact) to raise his opinion of me. Fast forward a generation and the Pope went off on a crusade on the other end of the map. I figure this is a perfect time to try and get my county back so I go to war and win it back.

Now I get the message "wrong type of holding in demesne" but I'm not sure what this means. Is there any way to revert the county back to normal?

it means you are in control of ether a city of a church and as a lord those are the wrong kind. give it to somebody to get rid of the alert

It was in an earlier post on here that I cannot find atm. When a Religious Lord owns a county the Bishopric "church" takes over as the capital of the county, when a mayor takes over an entire county the "town" becomes the capital. Since you are a noble you need the barony "castle" to become the capital again so that as count, the capital of the county is the right type.

when you took over the county, you only took the capital.
Which was a church holding.

Its a bit of an oversight that you cant also fight against the holder of the castle holding in that province and take that as well.

You somehow have to gain control of the castle to make it the capital again.
Or you gift the whole province to the holder of the castle and then somehow take everything back from him.

Thanks for the replies!
Can be solved by clicking with the right mouse button on the picture of the city/church and choosing a new vassal.

If you wish to keep control of the county yourself, or give it to a noble rather then a bishop (which is often something I'd recommend, as ruling over a vassal who holds a county that is either a theocracy or a republic will cost you a -30 opinion hit due to you not being the same government type), all you need to do is gain control of a castle in that county, and it will automatically become the capital again.

The best ways to do this is to either simply revoke the baron's title (which WILL give you an opinion hit from all your other vassals, but is often still the simpler of the solutions), or, assassinate the entire family holding the castle so that upon the last holder's death, it will revert to you. As barons and their family only require 50 each to assassinate, so long as you have enough cash, and a decent Intrigue, this should remain a feasible possability. If this is the path you choose, I would recommend setting the spymaster on the county as well to increase assassination chances and lower your chance of discovery.

And, of course, there is admittedly the third option of inheritance, marrying your heir and the heir of that holding together, and when both them die and you become their child, you will have the holding. This usually is best reserved for duchies and above, however, as it takes alot of time for this to come about, and really is only effective for one title per generation.

I know its late replying to this but I can confirm that this works. I conquered Rome but had wrong hold type since the capital of the county was a temple. I massacred one of the barony families ( had to kill 4 of them ><) and received the barony, which automatically became the capital of Rome. Thanx NinjaPepper for the help.
Seems like it might have been easier (though admittedly probably not cheaper) just to build a new castle. Or give the county to the baron and fabricate a claim, then revoke for free. Saves risking the known murder, and saves plots.
