So there is a feature in game that makes events happen to take away traits if you have too many traits... This is to keep players from getting to over powered....
So again its a feature and is working as intended...
Is this why my perfectly groomed heir suddenly went insane in her 20's?
Yes if you aquire more then I believe 6 traits then events happen that take away traits.... However you can still aquire traits too... So what happens is an event will fire that gives you a 7th trait and then another even fires to take a trait away and then an event fires that gives you a trait etc etc... This is very common on old rules because they typically have aquired alot of traits bye the time they are old....
But it can happen with any character if they have reached "x" number of traits...
As for making your character insane thats a bit different, the game doesnt attempt to screw over your character because you have alot of traits however for insanity things like...
Zealous, Possessed, Scholarly pursuits, high Learning traits, etc can lead to the insanity events sparking....
Infact Lunatic characters can often lead to some of the most enjoyable events in the game... you could even get military advice from jesus! Or decide to make a horse a council member... Or remove pants from all of your people to improve fertility!
I mean, after I got over the frustration of having her go insane, I had plenty of laughs at the ridiculous events.
She even had a half-decent reign (short as it was).
