A good ruler always meets his foes head-on, even more so if you're outnumbering the enemies. Now, depending on the martial skill of your character and that of your foes, i'd say it makes a lot of sense you could become wounded or incapable.
Dying while incapable is a blessing in disguise really, at least people will respect that 6 year old when he's adult for not being a new ruler!
And I have seen it often as you describe and is so annoying.
That’s a fairy tale, even Hannibal and Scipion even when “in battle” had a good retinue of body guards and were in the back, so since those ancient times to a General to be killed would be very bad luck or because things were very bad, never in normal circumstances when they were wining unless they did something really really stupid.
My solution: Never lead armies
Yeah you might get brave, or some prestige but it isnt worth the risk in my eyes.
But having high martial skill is amazing. The max levies for example with 1 martial may be 1200 troops but with an 8 martial it jumps to 2300 in my experience at least with Mali.
i agree again; plus you start to become each time better general with nice traits.
usually i only lead when i have a "safe heir"
I'd rather let my character die, also become incapable afterward.
heir is a genius though.
That's smart I think I'll start only leading armies once my heir is 16 and educated.
"Whats that dear? You want to give me control of your duchy and counties overseas and grant some of your vassals independence, lower crown authority, and change inheiritence to seniority?"
*drool*
"Well, if thats what the king wants, its what the king wants."
"Oh by the way husband, i want my independence"
*drool*
"Thanks!"
Lost a big chunk of the land i had recently gained, pretty much every faction fired off causing several vassals to go independent, and royally screwing the kingdom into having kings who die every 3 years cause they are so old.
But you get that boost to levy numbers for being a king with high martial, regardless of whather you are leading the army. Just get your best martial generals to educate your heirs, have the heirs lead armies when adults to make the armies effective (and possibly improve, but it hardly ever seems to happen) and as soon as your surviving capable heir becomes ruler, have him sit at home with his high martial boosting levy numbers, and educate the next generation of heirs.
Just be careful of culture changes when first getting your best generals to educate your heirs (make sure the generals are same culture as yours). Once each generation of rulers and heirs educates the next, the culture problem goes away.
I had the exact situation as you and just don't get detered. Play on and situation will usually resolve in a bit.. yes you may lose a few title here and there.. just become emperor and vassal them. IF it doesn't work.. fight and unified your kingdom again.
And wow i had to be tyrant for a 30 years because my character just refuse to die.
...but other than the little things, the game is very enjoyable.
