Turn a county tribal?
When you're playing a tribal pagan, you'll often conquer counties that have (already) become feudal. Is there a way to make them tribal again? If I rule those newly conquered counties myself I get penalties for Wrong Holding, and any vassals I place there dislike me for Wrong Government.

I really don't like how tribes work along with feudal holdings and the such because it is so difficult (and expensive) to change all of your holdings government types. As far as going back to tribal I am pretty certain you can't.

I don't think you can, and I suspect that's deliberate. Once people start building cities and centres of government and stuff, they won't generally go back to living in nomadic communities or ad hoc villages.

However, you could always do what most tribal conquerors historically did and just move your capital to the lovely civilized lands you've conquered. Then you can go feudal without needing to pay any money or research any technology. Your tribal vassals will still get the penalty, but eventually they'll catch up on their own.
Nope you can't, it's one way only. Somehow it is hard to magine band of Vikings or Slavic Warriors demounting rock by rock from a castle, just to build up a hillfort. This dosn't even make sense.
But I know your pain, I decided to go feudal in just because I conquered holdings that are already upgraded to castle so -30 from vasals that are controlling them, and bad income.
You can always make them independent if you don't want them for the time being.
Keep raiding until all your own hillforts will be lvl IV, and your vasals (you can always help them build up when you will be done with your holdings).

imagine some vikings siege a castle and take it, it would probably be badly damaged, now instead of repairing and remanning it, they would create some tribal village?
possibly they would use some of the stones for building if needed.
it just sucks that feudalizing is 1 way process while all the other stuff is dynamic (for example republics)

Doesn't have to be demounted rock by rock. They can grab some trebuches and catapults and wreck havoc on the castle, and build their own homes over the ruins.

Well, that is quite possible too ^^

Actually discovered some neat way to change feudal holdings in tribal - it's simple - you use free slot in county window and build tribal holding. When tribal holding will be built, it will become de facto capital of holding, you then give cities and temples to other vassals. Zero penalty that way. Tribal holdings though cost 50 prestige each.

As tribal you can pillage those buildings and destroy them. If you wanna keep them and use them normaly you need to change to high centralisation (easy if you are a duke), switch to Christianity or Islam, chose adopt feudal and then switch back to pagan.
To my knowledge only unreformed feudal pagan is slavic duchy of Croatia, but it is quite hard to play since Lombardy or Byzantine empire will declare Holy war on you. Often at the same time and mercahnt state of Ragusa also wants Your capital. But you can turn holdings from tribal to feudal as long as you do it at province with slavic religion.

Those non tribal vassals will give you a steady income - some parts of the map are not good for raiding.

I have had it happen that a feudal country becomes tribal. I think it happens when your heir already owns a tribal holding and you become him.
As a tribal you can of course raid holdings that are feudal and there is allways a chance of destroying them.
You might run into problems in the late game because you will have light troops and lower tech and everyone else will have heavies and higher tech.
