How to play as Tengri/Steppe Hordes?
My country is poor, has no economy, and if I take over any territories it gets split due to gavelkind. I pick the old gods starting date. I tried raiding but only got 1 gold

1. You have to raid a non-tribal holding to really get any money, and to get any money then you either have to have a ship in the adjacent sea province, or have an adjacent county that you own to the county you are raiding.
2. Your territories gnerally won't get split by EG succession as long you don't hold more than one type of the highest title type you have (ie: If you are a king, only hold one kingdom and less than 51% of any other kingdoms).

Convert to a christian or muslim faith so you can become a feudal lord and wipe away gavelkind. Then convert to the local Tengri if you want to. Its a moot point though, since the real hordes will probably come in in a few hundred year and mop the floor with you.

Yeah, the problem is that I picked a landlock duke country. When I ddi 'Ambition, become king' I capture the other Duke titles, but I don't have the money and piety to form the king title. Also because im landlocked, I can't raid anyone other than other tribals.

Go for Turkestan. Turkestan is money country as it borders Khiva, which is rich. Also, focus on reforming Tengri as quickly as possible (also helped by grabbing Turkestan). Once you do so, you'll get a holy order called the Lords of the Sky. Become Cuman culture and you can vassalize them if you have a king title and hire them for free. They make an excellent raiding force as they cost no maintenance. They also help hugely with controlling rebellious vassals, as even a powerful faction will have trouble raising enough troops to beat them.

If your realm splits due to Gavelkind, remember that you get claims on any titles which break away. Use this to get them back.

Also, make sure you keep a landed tengri duke or higher with Turkish culture, as if you do Seljuk will spawn in his court as a Tengri character and probably conquer a chunk of Iran.

You could also pick business focus if you have WoL dlc.
