What is a despot?

I am playing as the Emperor of Byzantium, and I pressed my kinsman's claim on an outside kingdom. Instead of becoming a king, he became a despot. Why is this and what is the difference?

No difference. Some cultures/religion get different names for everything between a baron and an emperor. Despot is the greek culture name for a king level person in this game.

There's none. I covered this already this evening. The only difference is a cultural one. Greeks call Kings Despots and Muslims call theirs Sultans, etc...

There's also a special title of despot you can grant that puts them above other heirs but under Born in the Purple, unless the despot is also born in the purple.

Oh yea, that's a honorary title though. I think only the Byzantine have it though.

Despot just means King in the Byzantinum culture. It is also a honorary title usually given to the oldest son of the emperor
