So how exactly do I raid/sail up rivers in The Old Gods?
I declared my intent to invade Scotland, but when I land my troops on their territory, I can't click the tiny torch n' axe button in the top right because "my units are in friendly lands." I thought you can loot and raid anyone of a different religion.

Also, I have no idea how to sail my ships up navigable rivers, which sounds really cool as it involves a lot of guerrilla warfare. Any ideas?

You have to toggle raiding first in friendly lands, before departing.
However, it appears to be bugged at the moment.

You have to be in friendly lands in order to activate looting.
Right click on the rivers as with oceans. Only big ones though like the Ganges and Seigne.
You have to be in your own territory (or maybe in any of your liege's territory when you're a vassal, not sure) in order to toggle a unit as looters.
I haven't played as someone capable of looting recently, but I've heard there were some issues with it, so you might have trouble even then...

And sailing ships up rivers, you should be able to just select the ships and click on the river.

you have to toggle them between looter/not looter when they are in your lands before they set off to loot somewhere. when you select your unit you should see the icon on the unit info box at the top.

You have to toggle the button while your troops are gathered in your own lands and then take them to where you want to raid. You can't cue it up when they're already there.

It's only the big rivers that you can sail down. Elbe, Rhine etc. If you look closely at them you'll see each acts as a tiny sea zone.

Also, why the hell isn't The Nile a major river? That would make Abyssinia so much less of a pain in the ass to conquer.

is it because of the nile delta? the main river seperating out into smaller channels before reaching the ocean?

There's no reason why a longboat wouldn't be able to sail up it with such a shallow draft.

longboats cant go down the minor rivers atm, so if they could make it up the delta i guess theyd have to be able to go up any river aswell?

The Rhine has a delta. They shouldn't be able to travel up that either, yet they do. (Not that I agree that they shouldn't.)

Honestly, they should be able to sail up just about any river. In terms of balance it would be incredibly broken. That aside, The Nile is the largest river in the world. They need to make it traversable.

Fun fact: apparently the raiding feature is completely bugged and doesn't currently work. So if raiding doesn't work for you now, you'll have to wait for Paradox to remedy the issue. Have a nice day!

That would explain why the AI never seems to raid me anymore hehe

Raiding works totally fine for me still. Tested as of today (land raiding though, not norse sea raiding).

And yeah you have to turn raiding on in your own lands and then go where you want to raid. You can, however, turn it off at any time, which is sometimes handy.

A lot of the major/minor rivers thing seems like balance issues, also historical precedent. I'm not sure why India has major rivers given that they're almost never going to be used, but I'm guessing it's because it was produced after Old Gods and thus required no retrofitting.

And hey, if we're going for accuracy here it also makes no sense that norse Christians can't traverse rivers.
