How to end the anti-papacy?
Is there a peaceful way to end the reign of the anti-pope I appointed?
When he dies, he just gets replaced by a successor.

A side question: will I get any benefits from joining the crusade that the 'ordinary' pope called?

I don't believe there's a peaceful way to end it, no. He will either have to be deposed in a war or the original pope must suffer that.

I think I've seen the messages like '%CharacterName% is no longer Anti-pope for Pope %Name%'. Does this mean they got deposed?
Also, what happens if I change my investiture back to 'Papal' when having Anti-pope appointed?

Try it and find out! And then tell us what happens :D

So, to anyone still interested:
- I've tried changing Investiture back to 'Papal' - it does nothing
- I've tried changing the Investiture and then killing current antipope - he just gets replaced by successor
- If my king who appointed anti-pope dies, nothing happens

And still, I once had a (seemingly random) message 'My anti-pope just stopped being one'. I got no idea why - maybe the pope asked him?

I think you have to invade the Papacy and install your Anti-Pope as the new Pope of the Catholic Church.

Have you tried it? How hard it is? I mean, all catholic rulers will probably come and defend the Papacy?

it depends how much they like you i think. i ahd no problem taking over the papcy after waitng for a holy war where the pope was sending his troops into battle. waited until they were far away and marched right into rome. just react fast.

The problem isn't allies, it's mercenaries.

Actually, I've finally found a way to do this.
You can declare war to Pope (claim for Papacy) and then immediately surrender. You will lose some prestige and considerable amount of gold, but you'll increase the Moral Authority of the church.

I decided against trying to overthrow the pope, because I'm too far away (started as Poland), and he's too rich.

You can give away the county that your anti pope is a bishop in to one of your vassals orcreate a new vassal for the county.

Winning the war against the pope is not hard. He has no allies because there is no marriage. You can siege his other 2 de jure counties not Rome and force 100% war score. Usually need around 15-30K troops.

15-30K troops is pretty hard by my standards. Remember, almost ALL of the mercenaries will be hired! You have your levies and retinue v his 20k doomstack. And if you aren't near Rome, you either need to risk a battle at low morale to to boat or take tons of attrition going there.

I only did it once but it was no problem, just got my troops to rome immediately by ship and waited till all holdings were sieged, maybe the papacy was weak because it was relatively early in the game?

If your empire after you claim the papacy just revolk his land if you have spare church in your land give him that and give rome away and if italy king exist he will take rome for him self after you grant it indepence.
