The mongols and the inevitable whooping
I know that this has been talked about quite alot, but when the experience of fighting the mongols actually hit me, i feelt very puzzled.

I started playing as Moscow, developed from pagan to feudal ortodox and i have really, really expanded. However, i can only muster between 11-12k troops. This is because my kingdom (rus) have had its fair shares of powerstruggels, also my economy hasnt been that good either, much better than anything else in my part of europe, but obviously lacking.

Maybe im a total looser, maybe i dont got what it takes to play CK2. But when my hard earned army gets defeated by the forces of 62k mongol army with a further 50-60k total soldiers in reserve, i cant see how i could possibly have done to get enough troops, money etc. except maybe conquering all the known world...

When people give tips on how to defeat the mongols, they say get a 120k army. But how? I already own almost all of eastern europe, but i litteraly get defeated in 1 year. Whats the point of the mongols? To really give them such an advantage that they cannot be beaten unless you make half of Europe your empire? Do you need to play the game with the mongols in mind from the start?

I cant wrap myself around why the developers would force a player in who chooses to play in eastern europe so few options. Either carve out a game-breaking empire or pledge and hope that they dont retract your holdings.

What are your views of the implemenation of the Mongols? Well balanced? Such advantage required to simulate the IRL mongols? Almost rediculous?

As you understand, i dont really like the great advantage the mongols get. I feel as tough my game ended before they golden hord even entered the map, 50-75 before in back in the 12th century.

thankfuly the new DLC will fix your issues, as the eastern hords will now need to build up as a normal nation.

Thats positive news indeed. Ofcourse the mongols should be hard, but i think that anyone that has been a weak feudal lord fighting tribals know thats hard enough in many instances. Add to that horse archers. They dont need the free boost. They allready conquer everything they look at.

I believe Mongols are balanced well enough. You likely won't beat them in the first invasion unless you own a lot of land. But it is possible to beat them in the 3rd or 4th war. Their initial army will drain fast from fighting and sieging, thus after a few wars they will not be as overpowered.

Quite rightly, you need to keep them in mind when you start a game in that region. Thus you should aim to build castles in your provinces, develop your personal domain well, have high crown laws, carefully manage your vassals to be very stable. Being catholic also helps you greatly, due to the numerous and very powerful holy orders.

I don't think that mongols should be nerfed. In fact, I believe they should be buffed a little (quite possibly the new dlc will do just that).

I played an entire game through recently and I didn't see the mongols even put in an appearance. They were mentioned, but I made it to the end of the game and the bastards didn't even put in an appearance, much to my chagrin as I was hoping they'd beat up the Byzantines a little bit!

Becoming a tributary as in history should help.
At least i think this will be one of the unlimited features. DLC or not.

If you're a kingdom rank or below, you can just swear fealty to the mongols. It really is the easiest way, and because Mongols tend to have terrible trouble with keeping internal order and raising crown authority you should be able to expand and ultimately win freedom from within the Mongol Empire.

As for whether the mongols should be nerfed.. I don't think so. Until the invention of massed gunpowder steppe nomads are pretty much the ultimate military force of the medieval world. Standing against them should be almost impossible.

Kill the ruling Khan, create strive.

Well the Mongols were the strongest in their time. You want to match that or wait until they exhaust their power a bit fighting Sunni or Catholics.

There is somethink really wrong with your kingdom, can you add some pictures? Of your country, ruler, military screen, it should be clear what is wrong then.

This. The Mongols were /the/ dominant power of their time. It would be silly to not have them be near-impossible to defeat, because for a very long time, they were just that. The rulers in eastern Europe bent their knees to the Khans, or they found themselves surrounded by thousands of mounted archers, with their cities in ruins and their people enslaved.

They did eventually reclaim their realms, though. It took a while, but eventually the Mongol Empire fell apart from within.

Do what I do and be the Basileus. You should be able to call up a million men as levies by that point, plus every mercenary in Europe as reinforcements.

And those sexy Cataphracts. Those sexy, sexy Cataphracts.
