They really do get worse, as the pagans get larger raiding parties as time goes on.
The only way I've found to avoid them is to be the the very poorest provinces around, as the AI sends them to the richer provinces. If you have nothing for them to take....
Being poor sucks though... Ask Kenny. Another way to avoid being raided is just upgrade all the walls and forticifaction in the top and sub holdings of costal provinces. This way the entire loot bar will be protected and raiders will get nothing from sitting on your costal provinces.
Or you could try the "switzerlake" achievement of EU4 in CKII and just avoid owning costal provinces ^^'
Yup. Nutty vikings. I've even had them raid places off rivers and coasts where they can't get the gold. Although I've never seen them in the alpine province....
Yea except you need at least three holy sites which can be tricky depending on where you started.
And there is nothing stopping you from trying to get the norse religious sites while you are still catholic. That might of course be a bit hard depending on your start though.
Long answer: Place retinues at your richest coastal province, so whenever they go to raid, they'll always go to that province and will promptly get wiped out by the levies. From there, it's just a matter of following the boats back to their Nordic home, sacking the county of whatever petty chief had the balls to (try to) raid you, taunting them for the irony, capturing him, and then executing him the day before the hostilities end. No matter how many chiefs you murder, they never learn, but it sure is fun to do.
And don't give me that spiel about "Oh that would hamper replayability/creativity/whatever!" The devs had no problem with making an event that settles the Magyars after they take Hungary, this is no different. Provided that the country isn't being played by a player, all but the most remote Norse countries should be Christianized by 1066 and raiding should cease.
Forcing players to outright conquer all of Scandinavia, when they had no plans for it isn't fun. It's like burning down a primeval forest just because the mosquitos won't stop bothering you. It's absurd. Fix it Paradox.
If you are that annoyed by it just conquer Scandinavia, put a gentle christian in charge and grant him independence. There done. That only took 5 years ingame.
