Tips for starting in viking Age
So I'm pretty bad at this game, I've tried watching tutorials and let's plays and can't get my head around the mechancis and what to do. But I still enjoy it.

I want to start a game in the Viking Age (The one after the Charlamange DLC) but I'm not sure who would be best to play as.

Side Question: I don't understand how battles work. I've been trying to do the recommended Irish guy who has a claim on 3 places I believe and even when I'm told by tutorials that I should win, I always lose the battles. Any tips you can throw my way?

OK side question is more important then your first. Please provide some screen shots of your army and the battle, and see what we see, could help.

You may not be putting enough commanders in the army. Even a not good one is better then none. You may be attacking across a river or other disadvantage. You may not have actually raised all your levies, and are attacking with less soldiers then you realise.

When you say start in Viking Age, you mean as a Viking or as anyone?

So I raised all my levies, like I went through all my military levies in the tab and raised them all, I than had all my armies conjoin into one military force and sent them down across a river to the enemy, I had about 100 less men than he did.

I had no idea that you had to do commanders and such, I never saw that in a tutorial that I can remember. I tried to buy merc's but I was to poor as well. I also had no allies to call on.

As for viking age, who ever would be easy but fun to play as, viking or not.

Duke of Ostlandet. Take the ambition to become king of Snoreway, eat surrounding O.P.M.s until you have a majority, form Snoreway, offer vassalization to the remaining de jure mooks. Raid Bremen, Hamburg, Sticht and Julich over and over and over again.

Don't declare wars on an enemy who has more men than you. Wait until he's declared war on someone else, then jump in and catch him with his pants down. Don't cross rivers into an enemy force. Be the defender in the mountains.

Pretty much the easiest viking start is NANTES. Its in Brittany to just to the west of france, the sticky out bit. You get a starting maintenance free army and fleet. which is pretty much a win button for any single county coastal province. and can used the raid like hell for ages. you can swaer fealty or strike out on your own, and easy to change to any culture/ religion from concubines

going by pure numbers is the worst thing to do, you hvae to take into account what types of troop the enemy has, commanders and their traits, locations and how you position ur men ( what flanks they are in) there is alot to it, i suggest posting on the paradox forums as you'll get better answers then just "have a bigger army" theres people there willing to help newcomers, i also recommend you watch arumbas playthroughs on youtube

if you friend me and ask me when I am playing ck2 (which is a lot) you can just view my broadcast and I can explain anything to you, or I can just play a game and you can ask questions as I go so you understand what I am doing.
