Harold II Godwinson and his tiny army

Why does Harold spawn with like 6,000 troops. The fyre stood around 30,000 uncalled men before the battle of hastings, he had 7,000 men at hastings to Williams 7,000-10,000. He was popular, chosen by thw Witen and a hardened veteran from the Welsh invasions by King Gruffydd. Why does he spawn with so few troops.

Try restarting the scenario. In the past even troop sizes were somewhat random. With some luck you can get a few thousand more.

Probably some balancing considerations were involved in deciding to nerf his army. Game mechanics would leave him winning the war 99% of the time if they used the real numbers.

The game can't accurately simulate several things affecting Harold's military position. It can't really be set to have his troops exhausted after defeating Tostig to the north. And the game can't accurately simulate his troops not maintaining their stronger defensive position at the top of Caldbec Hill during the initial Norman rout and exposing their flanks and then falling for feigned additional retreats afterwards. So I guess Paradox simulates things by having Harold's army generally weaker overall.

Speaking of Hadrada...

He should have won against Godwinson. He made some seriously poor judgements that cost him his opportunity to be defeated by William in Godwinsons stead. (William wins this war no matter what when Godwinson marches his forces North rather than staying in the South to face him. Harald winning up North does not change this result)

I don't know about William winning no matter what. Had Godwinson's army maintained their shield wall on top of Caldbec with marshy ground protecting pone flank and forest on the other, as tired as they were they could have withstood Norman charges uphill forever. Especially with the demonstrated weakness and lack of morale on the part of 1/3 of William's army - the Breton auxiliaries. The initial Norman attack turned into a rout and retreat. Sadly, the english broke their shield wall advantage and pursued. And then kept doing it when William decided to feign retreats. English had a definite advantage and the battle won, had they simply kept thier shield wall on Caldbec until the Norman's gave up with their Breton allies already beaten.

Yeah the Normans should't have won. Had Harold II Godpinson waited in London he could have 27,000 to 37,000 troops for hasitings but instead had 7,000

I've seen him outnumber Harald and Tostig before having 13,000 troops to their 11,000 so is it just random?

I think traits and stats are for most rulers and event troops are based on Martial skill.

Hide and let the other two armies fight against each other. If you have the Sons of Abraham expansion, ask for a loan from the Jews and buy some mercs, then fight the other armies after they've fought each other. Don't attack unless it's clear you'll win, let them come to you to a mountain or if none available, a forest or hill, preferably so they have to cross a river.

Yes. Wars such as these will go on untill all pressed claims have been resolved.

All three campaigns I played near Britain at the stamford bridge bookmark (as Irish, Welsh and Irish again) had Harald win and england remain anglo-saxon. Does he get more troops when he;s the AI? Or have I just had really weird luck?

I've never actually seen Harald win. O_o
