Disadvantages of republics?
What are the disadvantages of making duchies and such under your rule to republics, once you reach the size of 2 empires and more?

You can´t revoke them from republics without a war.
Republics will never give up territory without a fight.

So while safe and easy for now, in the long run it is a pain to gain them back.

Still worth it IMO, they make a lot of money and create trading posts on your lands

And I guess I'll start to create a lot of republics now.

You can make one or two, since non republic states have a limit of how many counties can be a republic. Still worth the trouble imo, lots of taxes.

Then I probably shouldn't waste my republics in the wastelands of mali.

Tbh... im not sure about waste in mali. Surely multiple cities give a boost but the tradeposts are the life&blood of the republic and they are a fightable commodity across the world. You can only have 10% of your realm as merchant republic...

You want a vassal republic with coastal counties. A good choice, coming from Mali, is the duchy of Tangiers at the tip of Morocco. A vassal merchant republic there will expand both into the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, providing good income. Mid-game, a good-sized empire with a couple of well-placed vassal merchant republics can easily give you a 30-40+ net income per month.

Just remember that you will have a permanent -30 opinion modifier for wrong government type, so maintaining good relations is a must. A high diplomatic stat for your rulers, an honorary title and educating daughters with the merchant prince will help and if needed you can plant your chancellor there to improve relations, especially right after a succession when your new ruler has a short reign penalty.

Be careful not to give them enough de jure territory to form a kingdom though. The extra opinion negative from being a vassal kingdom added to the wrong government negative is often enough to be a problem. That's one reason why Venice makes a terrible vassal, because it is so easy for them to form a king-level republic.

Can't you just make the kingdom first? Albeit then will they keep paying you $$$ once the kingdom passes outside of your emperor's grasp?

Old buggers that always hate you are still a problem even when circumventing the ''wrong government type'' malus.

Because they keep electing the oldest guy available, they never stay in power longer enough to build up a decent ''long reign'' bonus. Pretty much everytime there is a faction, you can bet the your ass the leader of the city state is there.
