You're sure you have set him as your heir in each of your kingdoms? And/or in each kindom in which you have demenses?

Does the icon of your son feature a little red drop of blood?

Does he have the 'legitimized bussard' trait? (the one with the blue cross)

If either of those is not the case, something about the legitimization process probably went wrong but you may be able to legitimize him again as a diplomatic interaction by right-clicking him.

Did you betrothe or marry him before you legitimized him? IIRC doing that creates a house for him, so legitmizing him after may just have set a succession not unlike matrilineal.

edit:

Ah, here we go:

An illegitimate bastard who has a child will create a new dynasty. Thus, if you are going to legitimize a child, it is best to do so before they give you grandchildren.

If you cannot legitimize a child or decide not to, you might want to prevent them from marrying, in order to ensure claims do not pass out of your dynasty. One way to prevent them from marrying is by granting them a city. Christians and Zoroastrians can also be prevented from marrying, and even have their existing marriages annulled, by being granted a temple. With SoA, Christians can also order their courtiers to take the vows.

You don't mention how old the son was or if he had any children prior to your legitimizing him. If he had a child prior to legitimizing him, that would have created a new dynasty.

going to read the comments after this, if you haven't recieved a solution read this.. What you need to do is.. Once you have a bastard you need to "Acknowledge the Child As mine" then when you're ready, Right click on the child and click "Legitamize". This should legitamize the child correctly and he'll inherit and be the big boy member of the family once you die, However. If you're a FEMALE character and someone seduces you or you seduce a male, You won't recieve your child as your own. It will be the fathers, So you're screwed, I don't recommend seducing people as Female characters.

Oh by the way, If anyone wants to play a game sometime on Ck2, Please add me! I'm looking for friends.

Interesting, since this is what I found on the wiki:

"Any known parent can legitimize a child by selecting the "Legitimize" interaction in the child's menu. The child must be a vassal or below of the parent, and the parent must be able to spend 20 piety. This brings the child permanently into the legitimizing parent's dynasty. This interaction is the only way for a mother to legitimize a child into her dynasty. AI parents do not do this."

I wonder if something has changed in the recent patch.

Well.. a month or two ago I was ireland and I ended up being a female ruler and seduced a male who was 50 and i was 17 :P, A year later I gave birth to the child and it was a boy!, I was so happy.. Until, Well, I was happy until I right clicked on the child and the option to "Legitamize The Child" Was Blurred out and it said
"you cannot legitamize a child as a female character, Only a male characters can legitamize a bastard / this child"

I was in a MP game with a friend and asked him to do it for me, He did it and it said my heir (the legitamized bastard) was not of my "Dynasty" or something similar and it said it would be game over once I'm dead, So I kept trying and trying and trying. Never worked, I also read the wiki about the "legitamized child option" and it did say any parent can do it. But it never worked for me and even when my friend did it for me, It was of the fathers dynasty and he had full control over him. It was a shame really, Because I completely forgot about the maritallised marriage and I had married the king in scotland, I bore 4 children with him but of course.. I couldn't play as the child I had, So I went and seduced a couple lowborn scum and the following outcome was what I said earlier :P.

Honestly, I have no idea what other outcomes or if anyone has been successful with a female ruler to get a bastard legitamized, Because it's never worked for me.

I might not have made sense with a few words here so sorry for that, It kinda happens sometimes for me :P

Whenever an illegitimate child is born you get a little popup with 3 options: legitimize, acknowledge, denounce. You can check the portrait first to see the kid's traits but you have to pick 1 of the 3 options (from the popup message) 1st before atempting anything else. If you legitimized with the portrait option 1st the prossess probably got bugged.

As for females, I had read in the wiki that they can acknowledge illegitimate kids as long they have enough piety and the real father doesn't acknowledge the kid as his. Or they can just marry a trusting husband with lower intrigue than theirs and convince him all the kids are his.

Well, When I was a female ruler and had a bastard I didn't have those options, I couldn't acknowledge the child as mine or legitamize him. I couldn't really do anything with him to be honest, Except raise him up like any other kid.

And from the males perspective, If I legitamize him straight away when those 3 popups come up he doesn't inherit ANYTHING, So what I tend to do is Acknowledge him as my own (as male character) and then right click on him through the portrait and legitamize him.

I mean, Wiki's really don't help unless you've tried it out for yourself, Oh and my game COULD be bugged but I highly doubt it, I'm in Multiplayer games very frequently. If it was bugged or something I wouldn't be able to join them and when I try validate my game, it says everything is fine!

Current character had a genius son in an affair, without any current heir. I legitimised the child. Yet the "No heir of your dynasty!" message is still at the top of my screen. If I open up the law window, the son is listed as the successor. However, when I view my son's character page (where you see troop numbers, amount of gold, stats, et cetera), it says he is of "House Phiti" (I am "House Pavala"). "House Phiti" is not mine, or the other parents house. It is his own dynasty, with zero other members.

After some time passed, I had a genius daughter, who I also legitimised. She is considered a part of "House Pavala", yet she is listed second in line to inherit under the law window.

Is this just a UI bug, and I will play as my son apon my death? Or, is this a bug that will cause a game over when my current character dies? Has anyone encountered this before, and if so, do you know any way to prevent this bug from destroying my current game?

Note: I am playing in Ironman, so console can't be used. However, I have read about a way to re-enable achievements when using mods/console, so I may look in to it if absolutely necessary.

Well, You've had my answer and a lot of others Kelvin, Hope it works for you next time, If you're on ironman you're pretty much done with that game but take that into note for what I said earlier. Hope it works :P

One of my daughter produced both; a bastard to bastard dynasty and a bastard to my dynasty. Only difference was that the bastard dynasty bastard father was unknown and the my dynasty bastard was one of my generals.

So I dont know how this goes... tell my daughter to do bastards only with my subjects? :D
Optimus Princeps Oct 3, 2016 @ 1:50pm
Well he is a bastard, you can legitimize him all you want but the child was still born outside of wedlock and many will not recognize him as a true heir.
