Should I Remain Francia or Form the HRE?

I am playing as Charlemagne and have taken over pretty much everything of the historical HRE including the Saxons. I am unsure though of forming the HRE is better or if I should keep Francia....

Can anyone tell me their opinion and any pros there are to forming the Holy Roman Empire?

Im assuming you have Gavelkind Succession. If you form the HRE and have multiple sons it will fall apart, as it did historically. So no HRE unless you have one son or eldest son succession.

Forming HRE automaticly destroys any other held empire and swiches succession to elective, so it won't fall apart.

Meaning, all the kingdom-level titles you hold at the time you form the HRE will become de jure part of it, so as long as you pass down the empire (or hand one of the kingdom titles to a vassal), you can get them all back pretty quickly whatever happens. You can pretty easily get west and middle francia, saxony, Italy and Bavaria this way if you start as one of the Charlemagne bros.

Charlemagne didn't form the HRE. It wouldn't exist for over a century after his death. He was emperor of the Franks.

He actually did form the HRE....It disolved upon succession and then was reformed.

The real HRE would actually not be possible to emulate given the games mechanics, due to the fact that an emperors heir is always an emperor too. Many rulers of the HRE in real life weren't emperors (or kaiser) but kings. A long time after Charlemagnes death the rulers of the HRE were kings and only Otto I was crowned kaiser by the pope again. Thus, many historians debate if in the time between Karl and Otto the HRE did exist and was just downgraded to a kingdom, or if it was just the kingdom of East Francia. The developers decided to take the version with EF, where the HRE dissolved.

He was the King of the Franks (Frankish Kingdom), King of the Lombards (Italy) and Emperor of the Romans, later on called Holy Roman Empire.
