But you can't have only a temporary title. You must be, at least, a count (except for the republic, then you only need your mansion in the capital). If you don't have any land title (you can have all the non-landed titles you want), you lose. Always.
About this question, I think you can do a trick in a non-ironman mode. As I said in another post, you can have some members of your family (or courtiers) who can become adventurers. I'll relate my experience and then my idea.
I conquered, with a norse, a few counties in Ireland (one or two, I think I didn't take over three). After that, Scotland and the other counties in Ireland declared me holy war and get me out of there. But, I had that territories, so I had a claim and a few members in my family inherited the claims. So, a few years later, one of my... sons? maybe was my brother? become an adventurer to conquer again Ireland. Of course, I wanted that territory as vassal, so I gave him a county (well, it was a grand city, but it's the same).
My idea is: When you give him a title and make him your vassal, he's an adventurer but has a land, so you can play with him choosing him when loading the game. But you can't do it in ironman mode.
