Allies?
I'm a noob. This game isn't easy. Trying to wrap my head around why I lost last game.

Last game it took me 12-13 years before I got a strong claim on my neighbor. Finally was able togoto war and luckily my barron is my friend. That gave me just enough troops to have more than him. Then after we went to war, he called in another count on the Island and I had to surrender. I don't get how he was able to call somebody else in or even get an ally. Was he their ally before I went to war?

I think allies must be gained by marriage somehow, and that means those two counts must've been related somehow. But if you marry off your daughter, that won't make her husband your ally right? I don't get allies.

You can ally people you have family ties with, wich means either by marriage or if the other ruler is part of your dynasty (same family name and crest). If that prerequisite is fullfilled you need to propose an alliance, wich is a diplomatic action.
You can make alliances during war, but the same applies.
Besides that in some cases other ppl can intervene in wars (mostly if you attack somebody of a different religion with a religious Casus Belli other of his religion in the area may help him).

If you're starting off as tiny, I'll add, save up to 300 gold and use mercenaries if you have to for a quick fight to destroy their army or rapid siege and dismiss them. You'll quickly snowball bit by bit this way.

Also, you can look at the pacts tab before you attack to verify if they have alliances, and hover over their solider counts for hidden information that isn't readily apparent.

You can make alliances during war. Oh.

So I should've used character finder, sort by dynasty and see who'll ally with me. Thanks.

300g. I should've got money from the jews. Pact tab thanks! I was digging in their family history and trying to figure it out that way.

I'd leave the Jews alone, because you're supposed to be doing a prepared invasion. Save them for an actual emergency. lol

It's best to just wait for one of your family members or yourself when you will need a marriage. Then you can look for alliances then. Even if you have a child, you can get them betrothed ahead of time.
