Imperial Elective
Hello all,
I'm not sure if its just mods that are breaking the game of if there's something else going on that I don't know about, but my Byzantine campaign seem to have taken a turn for the worse. I cannot choose an heir properly. Every time i select an heir to the Imperial throne, if they are not selected by the electors to be the next Emperor, my heir is automatically selected for me as a brother or sister or nephew rather than my son which is preferred, even though it is my son I have selected in the voting system. I know that the Byzantine Emperor title is to be lost, which i'm fine with, but all counties and duchies which i own will also pass to the successor voted for by the imperial electors rather than to my son, whom i have voted for as my successor and heir. It says that all my titles, counties and duchies at least, are elective, but if i wipe out all other possible family members that are would be successors, then the title for the duchies and counties then say that they are then primogeniture. Any help or tips would be appreciated :)

Its a general problem with CK2s elective systems, all titles that are dejure part of the title that the election is for are passed along with it.
Sadly CK2 doesn't know a difference between house-lands and crown-lands, like some historical elective systems did.

What you can do is hand as many lands as possible to your son BEFORE you die. Ofc that will make you kinda weak as an emperor since you'll lack a proper demesne.

Ah ok. I wasn't sure if it was just me not understanding things. I was handing over my titles to my son but for some reason, i cannot select him as an heir for all my counties and duchies as they are all apparently elective until, strangely, my son is the only one able to inherit and then they all revert back to primogeniture. In any kingdoms i have created, i can change succession to primogeniture and so it will revert to my son, but because my son is not my heir, unless the imperial electors vote for him as emperor, then i stand to lose everything and will end up playing as some random relative i couldn't care less about XD.

Thanks for the information though :)

the duchies and counties will follow the inheritance laws of the kingdom (or empire if they are directly under that) if those titles are in the same hand.
That is why you can't select an heir for them but can hand them out while you are still alive.

Kingdoms and Empires can have their own seperate laws, even if they are in the same hand (and will often have different laws if you conquer them. Its something to keep an eye on, since it could lead to a splitting of the inheritance if two kingdoms/empires you hold have different inheritenance laws and thus different heirs).

Also even if they don't elect your son, as long as he is at least a count you will play on as him.
Usually players play on as the main heir (the one shown on your char-screen as the heir) but if that character is not an eligible player character (not of your house / not at least count) you play on as the next of kin who is an eligible character.
