Do bastards ever inherit Primogeniture?
So my character, 19, had a couple of traits negatively impacting fertility, so I set about seducing as many women as possible in hopes of getting a child...

He did indeed, succeed in producing a bastard maybe a day or so before being killed by a woman he was trying to seduce. (The baby born window popped up between me clicking "private conversation" with my failed love interest and meeting the woman who would kill me).

Phew, I thought, just had that baby in time... But no... My brother inherited my throne instead of my bastard.

I had assumed that if I had no legitimate children then a bastard would be next. Apparently not. I checked the list of succession for my kingdom, it was my brothers, nephews and nieces, my bastard son was nowhere on the inheritance list. (Granted this was after I had died and my brother had taken over so he was no longer son to a king)

So my question is, do bastards ever take over in primogenitive kingdoms? Or is there absolutely no point trying to have a bastard as soon as you can to make sure you have an heir?

When I've taken over a character with poor health, or low fertility and no children I've always "rushed for the bastard" to produce an heir. Is this a pointless task?

I had a similar issue today, my wife reached age 45 and only gave me 3 girls (im playing with matrillineal OFF so that was almost a game over) so i went and seduced a girl and had a boy (im also using primogeniture) i legitimized the bastard and at first nothing happened, but after like an ingame month it automatically chossed him as the heir.
so to answer your question, yes, it works! just make sure to make him legitimate

Hmmm..
Not sure why it didn't work for me then, unless it had something to do with the close timing of the king's death so soon after bastard was born. I did pick to acknowledge him, so I did expect him to be heir instead of brother.

I suspect it was just unlucky timing. I died before the game ran a new check to see who is heir.

There's a bug with bastards inheriting - reload the game.

If you only acknowledged him he's still not eligible for inheritance (see the linked wiki-article)

The child needs to have the sign with the baby and the BLUE cross on it, to be legitimized.

Huh, I'm going to have to give my current character a bastard to see if it is a blue or red x next to it.

Useful to know.

In the case above, I probably wouldn't have had time to legitimize it before I died, only acknowledge, but useful to know for the future.

Hmmm... I do indeed have the red cross instead of the blue cross on all my bastards but don't appear to have an ability to legitimize them... only to acknowledge them.

hmm if the child was acknowledged you should have the option to legitimize the child in the right-click-on-child menu. Afaik it costs some piety and the child must be in your realm (not 100% sure if it needs to be a courtier or direct vassal or if being on a vassal court works)

I have no option to do that unfortunately. I wonder if it is culture/religion dependant.

I'm playing with random culture/religion on shattered world but my religion seems to be basically a regen of Orthodoxy. I might have ended up with a culture or religion that forbids legitimizing bastards. (Although I don't see that on the descriptions anywhere, but I might have missed it).

Did you acknowledge one ?
Pretty sure the option to legitimize on the character only appears afterwards.

Yes, they are acknowledged, but no option to legitimize them. If this isn't because of religion/culture, I wonder if it's a mod I have installed, I have several. (Although can't imagine any impacting legitimizing bastards).

Update:. I did a Google and found this

"So according to the dynasty_decisions.txt file, only christians can legitimize their bastards after birth"

I'm playing shattered world with random religions. So, it appears to not be an option for me.

Looking ut up..

It's actually:
has_polygamy = no

but i right now have trouble thinking of non-christians who are not polygamous, so it's factually the same. Just a little nitpicking on detail, but good to know for me.

Yeah, if your religion is one of the ones that has up to 4 wives you can't legitimize bastard children even if you acknowledge them as being yours.

Yeah, and another weird thing I discovered about the 4 wives thing...

I've been playing with random religion via Holy Fury... Which let's you have polygamy...

If you're not the ruler...

I thought it odd that my subjects could all have four wives, but I couldn't.

Turns out that although Holy Fury allows polygamy for your people, you need "Sword Of Islam" DLC to practice polygamy as a non ai character. (Which is a bit weird... But I was able to find infor under a $1 elsewhere... So I went ahead and did and now I have 20 kids, no need for bastards anymore).
