READ BEFORE UPDATING: 3.3.3 CK2 Update removes Monarch's Journey
EDIT: Apparently you can still play the Monarch's Journey if you rollback the version to 3.3.2
However, doing this and playing save games from 3.3.3 MIGHT corrupt the save file, so keep track of what version you played what save on. (Thanks Luksahol, and sorry about your save file.)
It is unknown if you can still earn hats and cosmetics from playing Monarch's Journey in 3.3.2 (Thanks Alexander)
It is also unknown if you can play all 16 rulers, or just a few. So if someone would find these out that'd be great.
And if Paradox sees this and removes Monarch's Journey entirely from all versions, then that's just cruel.

However, the old warning I posted still applies:
Guys, don't get the small 6.2 MB update for CK2. All it literally does is take away the monarch's journey challenges, as well as any rewards that can come with it.

This is disappointing, it's like paradox doesn't even want players of CK3 to go back to CK2 and unlock hats and beards. They could've actually benefited from this, since they'd get CK3 players to buy DLC for CK2 just to unlock CK3 hats even after the release date of CK3

The only reasons I can think of logically are that they just wanted to push the players that still cling to CK2 onto CK3 by taking off a fun extension of CK2 just to make the vanilla game mode pointless (except for ironman), and that it speeds up the loading time. They should at least make the Monarch's Journey a free DLC if the second reason is the case. Emphasis on free, because I feel a lot of people would be disappointed if you re-added this opportunity behind an extra paywall.

Note: part of this comment was reposted from a comment I made on the newest announcement's comment section. It has been expanded in this topic, however.

I read this too late.

It is indeed disappointing that they already removed the Monarch's Journey incentives, since they presented interesting and otherwise overlooked historical characters. This is one of those rare occasions in which an update is an abysmal step backwards.

I didn't expect this from Paradox...

Huh? Why remove this kind of content? Would be a nice thing to come back to CK2 to unlock cosmetics for CK3 ... :steamsad:

To add onto this, https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/threads/ck2-monarchs-journey-new-ruler-challenges-update-august-21.1313574/ deliberately says
"This is the end of the Monarch's Journey!
You've got one last chance to unlock special cosmetic items for CK3, by playing both Stefan the First-Crowned's Challenges and all previous Challenges in CK2, before September the 1st!"
I didn't even see this before.

Looks like you rollback to 3.3.2 and the challenges are still there. Not sure if they actually can be used to unlock anything tho?

I don't even care about those unlocked cosmetics at this point, it'll be years before I play CK3. I just want to continue enjoying CK2 and all its DLCs along with the small bonuses Paradox used to offer. Monarch's Journey was one such event which breathed new life into Crusader Kings 2.

I hope someone from Paradox reads this and at least considers the return of those featured rulers and their challenges.

You can just select the previous version under betas.
They are 100% going to be turning the cosmetics into DLC for the third game, so if you didn't get them all you can prolly just do that.

Well you can revert, that is true, just done that myself. The save I was playing, though, is corrupt, as it was used in the new version 3.3.3 before I realized the Monarch's journey is gone... what a shame. :)

What did 3.3.3 add anyways? 2 lines of code?
I don't remember a post about what they added, even.

Tbh I don't care if I can't unlock the things still, since it adds nothing but visual effect to CK3's gameplay. I'm just glad it might be possible to still be able to do these challenges.
I'll edit the original post to include this.

You can always play your saves on 3.3.3, and only go back to 3.3.2 for the challenges.

The Monarchs Journeys were like a campaign mode to me rather than the normal sandbox... They'll be sadly missed, and honestly CK3 could really use some MA love at some point, they were fun and gave set goals you didn't have to look into the achievement list for.

Our Chinese players cannot play ck2 now because this update affected the Chinese translation mods:steamsad:

That doesn't make sense, chonsidering the changelog:

Full Changelog 3.3.3:
- Fixed a potential security issue.
- Added support for Linux to get access to the currently released rulers for the Monarch's Journey. The rulers for Linux won't be continuously updated however (nevertheless those unlocked will suffice to get all CK3 perks).

I'm talking about a small 6.8MB update which happened this morning, but seems to only affect 3.3.3, as you can still play monarch's journey challenges on 3.3.2
