Black COA with 3.2.1
I've looked around and can't find anything for this issue with the latest patch. The typical fixes for the problem are not working. Deleted gfx folder, nothing. As a last resort I deleted everything, full uninstall and reinstall no mods at all. Same issue. Pretty much or all Catholic COA are black in a fresh install of the game.

I can't make heads or tails of it because it seems as though nobody else had this problem on this patch.

Your best bet may be to post on the official tech support forum[forum.paradoxplaza.com].

That was the gfx folder in Documents/Para../CK2 ?

You are trying this on a newly started game, right, not an old save, mabye even played with COA mods back then ?

Yes, that's the gfx file I deleted. And it's an existing problem outside of an actual game as well. When I go to select a time period, several of the suggested characters (all catholic) are already black shields.

Hmm...assuming you did indeed delete the game file folder and Documents completely when un and reinstalling... then i'd suggest to ony delete the gfx folder in the game files instead and do a "verify integrity of game files" afterwards.

I'll give it a try. I was in error when I said it was just catholic titles. It's also pretty much anything that isn't Muslim.

So far I've:

Disabled all mods.
Deleted all mods.
Deleted gfx folder.
Reinstalled.
Rolled back to 3.01.1 one patch at a time.
Attempted gfx deletion again with a suggested edit to settings file.
Deleted entire CK2 file in documents again (Because why not :P)
Deleted gfx folder in game files like you suggested, still didn't work :(

This one is mind melting. I'd love for it to be something I've done wrong but I'm running out of ideas with a fresh install and no changes to PC from when it worked and when it stopped. I'm particularly put off that rolling back didn't fix it, since it stopped working after an update.

[gfx_dx9.cpp:890]: GfxReset failed with error: D3DERR_INVALIDCALL: Invalid call

Several of these in error file

I'll go out on a limb here and say this is related. Seeing as how it's graphics related, though I'm not sure specifically how it would create an issue with the shields specifically. Everything is updated on this pc, graphics is a chipset.

Sounds to me an issue with your DirectX 9 (june 2010) installation.
Can only suggest to reinstall that and if that doesn't help, to indeed contact Paradox support.

EDIT:
A quick web search suggests this error usually happens when the graphics driver isn't correctly installled/corrupted. A Windows update might have messed that up or the aforementiond directX installation. Could also be another application messing with your graphics card.

I looked around for solutions assuming it was the Dx9 issue but nothing worked. I had posted on the paradox forum but hadn't gotten so much as a reply last I checked so I went with the last resort and reformatted my laptop. Works now.

It worked for me to update the graphics drivers with a clean install and deleting and re-loading the GFX folder, in that order. Did not unsubscribe from any mods.
