Create characters or no?

I see the game has a character creator, do you use it? The let's plays that I've been watching people are picking the existing characters that already have families. With the character creator you start a fresh family with no kids, no siblings, etc, etc. So how do you prefer to play? Create your own ruler or use one that already has a fleshed out family?

Is there a benefit to playing a character that already has a family? Does starting with siblings, children, etc, etc change anything?

I enjoy using the Custom Ruler creator. That said, I also enjoy playing as a default ruler. I guess it just depends on how I'm feeling when I fire up a new CK2 campaign.

Then again, I'm playing the GoT mod currently. No custom rulers there.

Depends, the main factors for picking if I’m going to create a character include

- Amount of children, the more (male) children, usually the worse off you’ll be as they might come back to bite you in the ass later with factions forming and giving claims to other countries if you marry them off to get rid of them.

- Succession Type, kind of ties in to how many children you have, but it deserves its own catagory as it can majorly shift the power in your realm if you start as an old ruler with Gavelkind with more than one son.

- Traits and base stats, pretty self expanitory, as most rulers have random stats when you start, it’s not a major factor, but if you just want to get into the game and start, instead of constantly rerolling what traits you get.

Edit: I should also note that dynasties have prestige, and other rulers will like you better and be more likely to accept marriages from you if it’s high. An example is the last landed Karling in the 1066 start date, he’ll pretty much be able to marry off his son to any other ruler in the French kingdom.

The thing with ruler designer is it's use disables steam acheivements, which is somewhat irritating. However, I can understand why as it's totally OP & and makes some acheivements that are otherwise very, very difficult become utterly trivial.

As I am sad enough to care about such things I've never used it so can't really comment on strategies based around it.

yeah its fun but I've been on hunting achievements for awhile so I cannot say how good it is currently. But download the mod that disables the restrictions on the character creation if you do buy it.

Yeah, I use it.

I have a mod that lets you pick any trait/skill without the age penalty and I can of course make a superhuman if i so choose.
I also have a mod that once i start a new character, i can generate a little family (parents, and siblings).

I rarely use it as I usually want to play a "scenario" with a certain historical character. If I'm playing early start dates, where so many of the starting characters are just randomly generated anyways (we have no idea who in hell the chief of some tribe in Finland was 1300 years ago) then I'm more likely to use it, even if just to get a look and family name/shield that I think are decent.

I think it is kind of a waste. It really only works on your first character. You can't really make them that good that it matters anyway. Having a piece of dlc disable achievements is kind of retarded.
