I love dueling.

The first time I ever got the event.

Debating just canning the save. Pretty much have no desire to keep playing. It's not even like it destroyed my campaign, I'm just done with dueling being so broken.

Apparently someone that can strangle a snake at 2 fckin months old and killed a bear at 6 can be beaten by some Ilmenian with the total mass of Saturn.

ck2: losing is fun!

There is a mod to fix that. The dueling mechanic is horribly mis-calculated in vanilla.
If you are playing ironman dont duel. Its a crapshoot.
If not ironman, do a quicksave, duel, if you expect to win like above but dont then restart saved game and try again. RNG will eventually give you the win.

its not really fair to say a player is bad when the results are based off of RNG and char stats.

ive never had this issue in my games, but i only play using the HIP mod so the mod may have adjusted duels to be more realistic.

I think what he is trying to say is its not broken, but it is fairly un-matched.
A 325 child of destiny should in no way loose a duel to a fat old low martial character. Unrealistic.
I'd agree, and so a few mods correct that.

You don't understand dueling in this game.

Duel is only ever to be done as a last resort, because it ALWAYS has a very high chance of KILLING you no matter HOW GOOD YOUR STATS are!!!

That is bye design!!!!!

Was very unrealistic that david beat goliath but he did....

There is allways 3% chance you will die in duel.

Ugh another one of these sad posts, get over it.

If the chance of failure is as high as 3%, and my character had a 97% chance to win every duel I only had a 21% chance to survive the 51 duels in a row necessary to get headhunter achievement. For those without enough intrigue to require 81 duels, the odds drop to about 8%.

It is possible it's that high, other achievements have less than 20% or even 8% overall chance in a lifetime (Immortality and Run with the Wolf I'm looking at you)

One thing that can help is a high intrigue skill. Sometimes the other guy cheats and I think it helps defensively in those situations (as odds of cheating are higher if you are massively better at personal combat than your opponent).

Dueling is dangerous, just as leading troops from the front are. If you don't have your succession secured, try not to engage in risky behaviors. That said your odds of dying are a lot higher if you enter a duel wounded, sick, stressed, depressed or anything else that lowers your health, and odds of just being wounded instead of dead are a lot higher if you're in a high health focus and have other things that raise health, such as artifacts, dog etc.

With 2k hours in the game I think I know how dueling works.

Aaaaand I know that the algorithim is broken and creates absurd scenarios.

David didnt duel goliath. If he did, he would have lost.

Not a fair comparison. But I get what you are saying here about duels being a last resort risky venture but I have to say I have even lost a duel when having duelist traits and going through several duels and winning only to die to a nothing nobody with no skills.

That is not balanced, nor does it fit your model and example.

Now someone above posted a very important factoid, one which I used myself at times. You can cheat if you have the right focus. That means other characters can cheat as well.
But even with that you can counter with other aspects of your character.
There just shouldnt be a time where a character with superior martial characteristics and duelist traits dies to a lowly character in duel. Wounded? Sure. Outright die? Doesnt seem balanced.

Get bent tbh.

Nah. The algorithim is wildly broken. Everyone knows this. Scenarios in which someone who can kill a bear at 6 is beaten by an obese diplomat who has an actual fraction of the combat skill happen more than they should. Instead of being fractional, it happens 1/3 of the time. Half of how duels work are that there are levels to a victory and levels to a defeat, in the Wolf Warriors and other pagan lodges, moreso than normal rivalry or titular duels.

The odds of a loss in overwhelming scenarios, even with cheating, seem on paper like they're acceptable, and I'll flat out admit you will win more than not with overwhelming odds in general, not just on paper.

In a total victory, you get the option to kill the opponent. These are what you get most of the time as a master duelist. You will generally not get wounded, but can be.

In a pitched victory you incapacitate your opponent, and are not offered the chance to kill them, you're more likely to be wounded here than in a total victory. Here is wherein you can actually die from a defeated opponent stabbing you when you turn away.

In a cheated victory, I.E poisoned blades, the enemy will almost always die. There is a chance before the duel that they will find out you cheated. After the duel there's a chance someone else will.

In a mutualistic loss, you give them a black eye, and wound them, and are in turn wounded but are defeated. This is a reversed pitched victory.

The algorithim is broken. Which is why, despite all the weights and stats, you will be, usually, without cheating, outright killed in a complete loss. No mutual wounding, it's not an equal fight, we're talking you get defeated altogether and the AI chooses to kill you. The AI choosing to kill you is fine, that's not the problem. The problem is that literally since dueling launched, everyone has known that the algorithim is downright broken. The AI has a vastly better chance at beating you than it should have in situations like this, where a fat, Naive Appeaser, with 2 martial, 6 pcs, in her 40s, who has never been in a duel prior, completely beats someone ordained by Johan himself to be a stupidly OP character. Not a mutual fight, not wounds or difficulty, just a complete whitewash.

That luck and proclivity for winning does not work for a player in identical circumstances. You don't have anywhere near a 1/3 chance of winning against impossible odds. At all. Not even close. Because for some reason, the mechanics behind dueling seem to be unintentionally fried. Suffering a faulty algorithim that doesn't calculate odds or dueling in large correctly when dealing with the player. AI v AI duels don't seem to have any issues with odds and have consistency and comprehensibility that PvE duels don't.

If you don't like any of that being pointed out, cool. I don't care.

2000 hours in the game has given me more than enough room to complain about flaws in the game. Dueling is one of the biggest that stuck around due to low priority. It functions just enough to not be broken entirely, but is still broken to a degree that makes most people just flat out avoid it.

Yep it's not an ARPG.
2k hours in CK2. I know what CK2 is. I'm not someone who just found CK2 because it's F2P. I have been here since 2012.
