How to perform the blood eagle on king Aella?

I have seen the computer perform the blood eagle upon a successful great heathen invasion. I am playing as Ivar and am wondering how to perform the blood eagle as he is my prison after winning the invasion.

I did it once by simply executing someone

Think it is just a random execution

It's just flavour text for executions, sometimes something else will happen instead.

Last time I captured him as Ivar an event popped up on what to do with him. One of the options in that event was Blood Eagle.

Thank you for the replies, it is much appreciated. I am specualting it is because I never got the reapers due DLC which introduced more execution methods. Also, I think the ruler needs to have the cruel or wroth trait; or the person must be a rival. Can either of you who successfully performed the blood eagle confirm any of this possible? Thank you.

It isn't dependant upon traits. You just need to be one of Ragnarr Lodbok's sons, then have Aella of Northumbria in your prison, and the event will pop up giving you the ability to blood eagle him.

And do you have reapers due DLC? I was Ivar and imprisoned him after a successful invasion with no event.

I dont have the reapers due and I beat him as Halfdan, after I beat him and he was imprisoned for a bit then the event to blood eagle him shows up.
