Why can't I build trade posts on a Silk Road county?

Just got back into CK2, and I'm playing as Zhou, a vassal of the Western Protectorate. I got two counties that lie on the Silk Road but I can't build trade posts on them.

I satisfy all conditions except "Can only build Silk Road trade posts in certain counties along the Silk Road", which doesn't make sense as I am on the Silk Road. Do I have to be the top liege to build them?

no but you need a certain amount of trade practices (tech) to build them and about 50 gold.

Yo,

Only certain provinces situated on the Silk Road can actually hold a Trade Post. You can spot them by a specific icon when activating the "Trade Zones" mapmode.

I'm having this problem as well. The icon says that it's eligible, I have the tech level to allow 2 more trading posts (I was able to build 1 in my capital), but while I have 3 more counties on the silk road, I can't build in any of them, with the same tooltip listed above - "can only build silk road trade posts in certain counties along the silk road". Never saw this before the Jade Empire update. Tried removing all my mods, problem persists.

^ I managaed to build a trade post. Usually there's only 1 specific county per duchy where you can build a trade post. I guess the intent is to reduce Silk Road trade post spam or something. Check the trade zone map, the counties that can have a trade post are marked with a bag of gold.

a good reason the silk road trade post was changed is cause players were conplaining they couldnt upgrade thier trade post cause the ai managed to upgrade theirs first blocking the player the abilty to upgrade theirs. And you cant have the ai blocking holding upgrades.

Necroing this thread bcuz I have this same problem. Trade tech out the wazoo, but I can't build anything in Constantinople even though it's eligible.

No, Constantinople isn't eligible! Regardless of real life history, the silk road doesn't reach Constantinople in this game (althought the Byz are within diplomatic distance from China and can interact with it). What you are seeing is a slot for a Merchant Republic trade post.

Like previous posters wrote: activate the trade zones map mode and search for a red purse filled with gold coins icon on the map. Those are the only provinces eligible for silk road trade posts. All other slots are either inactive or suited for coastal MR trade posts.
