Suzerain

I'm playing as India, the Western Protectorate has lands all throughout my lands belonging to various suzerain kings. Is there a way to get all of their suzerain nations to break free of them to take them on individually or am I stuck just having to fight the whole lot every time I want to press a claim?

I find the suzarain doesn't even come to protect them when I attack the vast majority of the time. You will occasionally get a notification saying China will be unable to protect their tributaries. The Western Protectorate itself is the one you might want to worry about, depending how far it is from the eastern portion of the map. Those wars tend to be messy.

It has grown quite large now, I can field the largest army followed second by the western protectorate. I'm 400 years into an ironman save so didn't want to risk just attacking and getting my arse kicked if there was a way to weaken their position

If you feel you are far enough away from the east map border and can completely take all holdings before a land army could march from that border, have at it. It's the Chinese army you need to fear at most.

Thr first time I fought them for real, their main holdings were in Anatolia, very remote and far from any help China could offer. But I rarely have to deal with The Protectorate because I'm hungry for their tributaries.

Well my issue is I border the east of the map and the WP are merged into my lands as well as own a large mass above me. I tried to attack and see what happened, China sent a 75k stack into my lands instantly. I had my men move in 4 separate armies and siege the 4 counties I needed, then defeated one of their split 15k stacks. 100% Warscore and it was over just like that, nothing too bad really
