Ya from what i can tell, it is given to the chosen benefactor of a won crusade, as i have never gained it myself but the one time i chose a benefactor, they had gotten it and i see the Ai's get it all the time.
It good for when your ruler and current heir is really crappy but u have a good relative that ud rather play as instead, make them the benefactor, win the crusade and get that trait which then makes that character a beast, play as them instead, and take back your original lands from your original ruler or his heir and then go from there.
You cant get it directly as a player as only someone chosen as a benefactor in a crusade can get the trait, then after the crusade, if you win and that person gains the target kingdom, you get an event asking if you want to keep your current character, or switch to your benefactor that you chose with their new kingdom and their new juicy Crusader King/Queen trait.
If you personally lead troops during the crusade you will get the ‘Crusader’ trait (it seems to be time locked, lead troops at the start of the war)
