- be greek or italian
- have the scholarship fokus (think some other things work too: scholar-trait and lunatic, but didnt test that yet, so can't confirm it for sure)
- be christian (probably not an heretic... not sure about that)
Thats makes the "delve into the classics" decision appear in your intrigue-menu, to actually use it you need a learning-skill of 6 or more (usually easily doable with the +3 from the fokus and the option to get some points quickly from building the observatory, so even a learning 1 character should manage it.)
Taking it and then deciding that you want to learn about the old gods makes you secretly (if secret cults are active in the game-options) or openly (if not) hellenic.
Ofc from there its rather a long way to go since you are most likely the only follower of a religion that most likely has a whooping 5% moral authority at that point (maybe more if you control more of their holy sites when you switch)
They changed Abydos for Syracuse... fell for that when I tried to do it with the count of abydos and couldn't figure out why I didnt get the decision, changed to Athens and became hellenic, then checked it in their religion-window and saw that they changed abydos for syracuse
But yea the main idea seems to be to restore it once you reformed the roman empire, with the "delve into classics" decision being more like the "hard" way.
Yeah, you need to control all holy sites anyway if you want to restore Rome, so as soon as you turn Hellenic you could reform the religion. That's what I did in my Byzantine run to see the new mechanics.
But why keep it at 1? Starting as a greek under the Byzantines and conquering Thessalonika, Syracuse and Athens should be plenty
