Artifact theft from Monastaries
I seem to get this even quite a bit where I visit a monastery and I either have to pay to upkeep an artifact, dont pay and gain content trait, or try and steal the thing.

I always pay and gain some ra-ra stuff from the monastary. cheap enough.
But this last time was an image of Edessa requiring 1500+ gold. Holy cow. Must be precious and worth stealing.
How chancy is the theft idea? What happens on success and what happens on failure?

If caught you get a piety malus and get kicked out of the monastic society. And I don't remember 100% for sure but I think you can also get a bad trait or get injured trying to escape.

Getting the artifact though is a great outcome. Such artifacts really boost a realm (like with global tax revenue or lower revolt risks etc). Check the wiki for specifics.

Yea the high level artefacts from that are usually worth it to either pay the big sum of money or being ousted from the order, after all thats just for one generation the powerfull artefact stays with your dynasty.

IIRC think the outcome for the "grab it and run" choice is that some guy runs after you and you have the chance to fight them or try to bribe them or surrender. if you pick the fight option you can get away with the item and stay in the society if you manage to kill the other person. but you can also die just like in every other duel. lost a fair amount of rulers that way lol. still worth the risk it if you have a half decent heir ready to take over in the worst case.

When my ruler was enough of a jerk to steal it that option has worked pretty well, although as with all duels there is risk involved. Rarely I had enough intrigue to trick them into not noticing the theft.

Not so good an option though if you are well advanced in the Society and want to convert some counties and/or teach virtues and you mess up and get booted from the Society. Sometimes even a decent artifact won't undo the damage you do to yourself.

But usually when I don't try to steal it the reason is I can't see the ruler actually wanting to do it. Those monastic societies tend to lard you up with trustworthy traits and such, so the ruler often seems like too much of a paragon of chivalry to do such a thing.
