Getting the artifact though is a great outcome. Such artifacts really boost a realm (like with global tax revenue or lower revolt risks etc). Check the wiki for specifics.
Not so good an option though if you are well advanced in the Society and want to convert some counties and/or teach virtues and you mess up and get booted from the Society. Sometimes even a decent artifact won't undo the damage you do to yourself.
But usually when I don't try to steal it the reason is I can't see the ruler actually wanting to do it. Those monastic societies tend to lard you up with trustworthy traits and such, so the ruler often seems like too much of a paragon of chivalry to do such a thing.
