How does DLC work in multiplayer?
I like to play this game with a friend and I was going to pick up Sword of Islam during the sale. My friend has no interest in playing as the Muslims and instead wants to pick up the Sons of Abraham DLC. Would I still be able to play as a Muslim ruler if my friend were the host and vice versa for him as the Jews if I were hosting?

The host shares his DLC with all other players. For example, if you have Sword of Islam and you host the game, your friend will also be able to play Muslims. If your friend has Sons of Abraham and he hosts the game, you will get all of the features of Sons of Abraham.

But will I still be able to use the DLC I own in his game?

I don't think you can. You can try if you want, though.

no. Whatever the host has is what the game uses. Since his game is the version everyone is playing.

Since he's the one who set-up the game and he can't enable dlcs he doesn't have so they aren't enabled in his game.

If you plan on playing exclusively multiplayer, your best bet is to shovel all the DLC onto one person. This is how it is with all of Paradox's recent (CK2 and onwards) games I believe.

I pretty much do this for CK2, since my friend has every DLC and I'm missing everything from Horse Lords onward. Which means I can effectively play the full game in MP until I get the money to catch back up.

You'll be able to use it in single player games or if you are the host in multiplayer but if you aren't the host you can only use what the host owns.

uggh, didn't notice the necrology before I responded

You can buy most DLC very cheap(1,5 $ / 4 $ ) on the grey market, the steam prices compared to the amount of content the dlc provides are ridiculous. Be smart and dont waste your money on companies like Paradox

can't wait for a paradox mod to lock this thread to satisfy his power trip
