Agnatic-Cognatic Elective bug or bs
I started as Poland, now have Wendish Empire, Poland and Lithuania. I got tired of all splitting up of lands from Gavelkind and switched to Elective. Everything was working fine, was able to stay in my Dynasty and I had all 3 lined up with the same successor. I go into a CB war for a county, I die from old age, my successor dies during battle and the entire Empire and Kingdoms split up. NO initiation to vote, just poof, everything slashed to pieces. This is retarded, at least prompt for a vote, otherwise how do you plan for succession 2-3 layers deep?? My Marshal is a polar bear btw, was trying to get him to King :) Yea I'm reloading to a previous save but not sure if I can stop this.

are you sure it was not elective gavelkind instead of an elective monarchy?

I just experienced something similar with Tanistry (Dynasty Elective).

I had Brythoniad Empire, Wales, Lloegyr, Frisia kingdoms. The Tanist for Empire was a 40 something Duke with good stats (not my choice but was good enough), he was same tanist for Wales (where all my demense exists). There were other tanists for Frisia and Lloegyr.

I died suddenly and on succession I was now a 11 year old previously unlanded random family member. No kingdom - Wales went to the guy who was also Empire tanist. I lost all my lands - all of them. I became a 2 county count in England for some reason?!? And all kingdoms vassalised.

Oh yeah, I was Anglo-Saxon too, when I had spent 4 or 5 generations of breeding ensuring Welsh culture was everywhere. Now, I got an option malus with everyone in the realm, I have lost the Welsh culture buildings creating the archers in my retinue. My retinue size has shrunk (I wasn't expecting that).

Why was there a new election for the Empire tanist when I died? This kid that I became was not even a possibility before the death of the ruler. Where did he get elected from and when???!?

There is a upside to this though. Always looking for the opportunity. I could have created Saxony kingdom with the last emporer but chose not to as it wasn't the right thing to do at that time. Now, I'm Saxon(ish), I'm going to create a new Kingdom and use the Huskcarl retinue speciality.

But I'd like to be Welsh again and have my strong Welsh demense back. How do I do that?

In the succession tab it says Agnatic-Cognatic Elective. I was Agnatic-Cognatic Gravelkind and switched to Elective on the right side of the window, so Agnatic-Cognatic (no change) Elective (changed). I don't have a problem with what it's supposed to be but there should be a prompt to have a vote after you die and your successor dies immediately afterwards.

Ok, each title had their own crown rules. When you switched the rules of your primary title, it did not necessarily switch the rules of you other existing Kingdom level titles. So your primary title of the empire when A-C Elective; but it's likely the other titles stayed as Gavelkind. Go back and check the inheritance laws of the other kingdoms and they'll probably still be gavelkind.

I try to switch inheritance laws before creating new kingdom level titles because of this.

Wendish Empire, Kingdom of Poland, Kingdom of Lithuania = Agnatic-Cognatic Elective
Kingdom of Pomerania = Agnatic-Cognatic Gavelkind (still my Dynasty but different ruler)
Kingdom of Norway = Agnatic-Cognatic Gavelkind

Is there a way to fix this w/o cheating? Or does it even matter? They're still under my Empire.

Kingdom of Norway: I don't understand how it says Norway is part of my Empire. I only own 2 counties in all of Norway and I'm not the King. It also doesn't show Norway as part of my Empire on the map. Everything else is the normal Poland color (my starting Kingdom), maroon. Norway is it's normal blueish-gray color. Yet it shows Norway in the "Laws" tab but I can't change anything.

Once you get to a decent size, what's the best succession rule? I lost Pomerania to another ruler still in my dynasty but I can't change it to Agnatic-Cognatic Elective. So (other than Norway) everything is under my Agnatic_Cognatic Elective succession except Pomerania. Should I try to fix this or just let him rule?

I think I'm Elective Monarchy because Elective Gavelkind is a viewable option. At least with Elective Gavelkind the vassals of the Dynasty choose the heir, then everything else gets split among children. What's the best succession rule once you have an Empire + Kingdoms?

At the Empire level, I almost always choose elective monarchy. What I don't do is try to hoard kingdom titles. I usually hand kingdoms out to my non-heir children and make those gavelkind. The empire title and kingdom that contains my personal demense I leave as elective.

Edit: The reason for this is that at very large empire sizes king vassals are way more useful than having a ton of duke vassals directly under your control. They consolidate vassal numbers and can save you a lot of effort by winning external wars.

That's what I was thinking but I'm worried that I give a Kingdom to one of my dynasty members, then I die and get voted out of succession. Like right now my elected heir to the Empire and Kingdoms is actually older than I am. If I hand out a Kingdom to a dynasty member, then my elected heir dies, it's going to be hard to get enough votes to keep my dynasty. Anyway, I think I'm going to try your idea, keep the Empire and Poland under me, hand out other Kingdoms to dynasty members with Agnatic-Cognatic Gavelkind. Kingdom of Pomerania is already like that.

the reason you see the crown laws of Norway is that those 2 counties are subject to the laws of the king of Norway

Well, the good thing about having dynasty members as your king level titles is that they will pretty much always vote for a dynasty member, and king votes count for more than duke votes. So you're not losing dynasty votes by handing out king titles to dynasty members. And unless they hate you and/or your chosen heir, they will usually come around eventually and vote for whoever you choose. I'm getting close to 4000 hours played now and I can't remember ever losing an election under Elective Monarchy. Just avoid incurring tyrant penalties and put some work into maintaining good relations with your voters and you should be fine.
