western protectorate pretty much any country either under them or near them are within china's range think of them as the on map presence of china.

Do you mean Thrace? I've never seen Serbia be within China's range (just checked the first three start dates). Thrace and certain eastern counties in the Byzantine Empire have access because Nestorian monks figured out how silk was made and Justinian sent monks to China to steal silkworm eggs. This resulted in mediterranean silk production in Thrace and a few other eastern counties.

As for what dictates the range, it mostly seems historical or just logical placement. I've also noticed that start dates also change up which counties are in range.

No, I mean Serbia, and I figured out it's because the byzantine emperor was the owner of a county in Serbia from his fresh conquest, but the question still remains what other modifiers are there, can ANYONE with an empire title have acess to china?

no as I mentioned the western protectorate dictates whether or not someone has access to china and its boons of coures there is also a game rule that you can pick that gives everyone acess to china but that disables achivements. so yeah when a country is close to the protectorate they get access to china and the grace system if your not then you dont get acess. oh and I think beeing next to someone that is a tributary under the protectoate does the same thing tho I cant say that for certain.

Eh not really. In some starts the western protectorate doesn't even have land and all the same counties still have access to China (Byzantines, east Africans). If the protectorate gets huge, then it can add Chinese access to places that wouldn't have had it otherwise, but the protectorate itself doesn't establish who is eligible to interact with China. That's already determined by the game depending on start date.

Protectorate seems to be able to make tributaries quite all the map (already saw him tributaries sweeden)
China range can be see by looking on the map; the little button to see the limitation of each continent; close to china. It's limited for east india; mongolia and tibet for the chiniese subjugation casus belli ; i think

I'm surprised no one else has mentioned it, but the Chinese basically are always able to interact with the owners of Silk Road counties, and in some cases adjacent counties.

i think it's realms along the silk road and tributaries of the western protecorate and the neighbors of those realms.

in one particularly crazy game i was able to kowtow before the emperor as the king of *Ireland* after the WP became suzerain of the nomad horde controlling scandinavia.
