Game Rules at Start
Gods there are a ton of options now, is there a guide I can read that explains them in some detail?

I prefer as historical/"realistic" a game as possible and many of the descriptions are really vague on how they impact this especially where Monks and Mystics is concerned.

If your preference is similar I'd be interested in suggestions based on your selections as well.

Most options will disable achievements. I keep all the options on default myself, you can turn off aztec invasion and ai seduction but i leave those enabled too.
My current ruleset is everything default aside from:
Plague-->historical start
Secret religious cults-->off
Devil worshippers-->off
Supernatural events-->off

Aztec invasion is disabled solely because the expansion itself is only enabled during After The End games.

The seduction thing has never bothered me (I just use seducers for target practice with my assassins, if necessary). I tend towards using some version of historical (might be a wider option on, say, the Fourth Crusade), and sometimes use slightly different settings depending on how early or late my game start date is.

Thanks for the replies. I think I should wade into dev diaries since many questions relate to dlc specific options.

Which is closer to history for example, Default or Fewer, on the Reaper's Due Minor Epidemics setting. Was Dejure Drift really a thing and which options represent how it worked best. Those type of things.

It'd be nice if every setting had some form of "Historical" option marker.

Here's what I decided to change from Default, are my reasonings correct:

Chinese Invasions --> No Major Invasions (Did China ever launch such an invasion into the game area during the game timeframe? Turned off because it seemed made up)

Aztec Invasion --> Off (Never happpened)

Major Epidemics --> Historical (Obvious Reason)

Minor Epidemics --> Fewer (Default seemed to have them too often)

Devil Worshippers --> Off (Dev Diary makes them sound too fantasy based with special powers)

Supernatural Events --> Off (Obvious reasons. Does this affect Devil Worshippers though, because I'd be good with DWs if they didn't have any actual powers and were simply nutjob cultists?)

Gender Equality --> Historical (Sorry ladies)

Pegan Reformation --> Disallowed (Not historical as far as I know)

What does the "Secret religious cults" setting do? Is this referring to being a Secret Jew or something else?

Edit: So I looked through the wiki and am I correct in understanding that Secret Religion and Secret Religious Cults are differnt things? You can still secretly be a member of another religion even if the cult founding rule is set to off?

I did keep the Supernatural Events, after all medieval people were quite a superstitious lot, so getting TOLD that weird supernatural stuff is happening somewhere actually adds to my immersion into a medieval world.

I'd be good with it if it were just superstitious talk and rumor but it actually adds things like playing chess with death, immortality, and a Cthulhu event chain apparently. Pass.
