Why does the pope accuse me of not joining the crusade?
I've murdered a few thousand people and sieged rheir cities but I still get 100 piety taken from me? Will I still get my gold for participating?

Think it can happen when your King isnt personally leading one of the crusading armies.

I had the same thing happen, beat the main muslim armies, lost more then 10.000 soldiers, was the biggest participant, but since my bedridden 70+ old emperor couldn't ride into battle himself the pope was angry at him.... btw DIDN'T SEE A CERTAIN GUY IN A WHITE DRESS AND A FUNNY HAT THERE...

On my last Crusade I did join. I picked a beneficiary and everything. I made sure my King was leading the armies. I even received a popup saying that I had reached the lands that we were crusading for and received the Crusader trait for my King.

2 minutes later a popup pops up telling me the Pope is pissed at me for not participating in the Crusade.... I think it is definitely bugged.

At the end of the Crusade my beneficiary was made king and I got a ton of Prestige and Piety...so I was correctly participating.

Did you actually invade the crusade target? To get the "joined the crusade" perk you have to invade say Jerusalem if that is the target, sieging down and fighting the enemy in Andalusia or Anatolia wont count.

It's a bit odd, but hey :p

Yes, I even recieved a popup saying I had reached the Crusade lands and received the Crusader trait. Right after that I received a popup saying the Pope was pissed I did not join the Crusade....I mean it was literally back to back popups.

Hmm in that case it might be that they really were on the same day. Did it take you long after the crusade was called to reach the destination?

No, not really...I was one of the first big armies to the area

It's not related to personally leading troops. It is based on war participation score. It can trigger when your war score is not at least 0.1%.

For reference see events\HFP_crusade_events.txt 6365, 6397, 6407, 6550.

And hurry up! The next time he has to scold you he'll excommunicate you. :(

But, BEFORE this event fired I had a popup telling me I was a Crusader and got the Crusader trait.... So how could I be participating enough to get the Crusader trait but not participating.

There is no correct explanation for this....it is a bug. Either I did or did not participate it can't be both. I certainly should not have been told I did not participate 30 seconds after I got rewarded for participating.

And when both of these events fired I was literally standing in Jerusalem (the target) having just defeated a large army there....so how is that not participating?

The Crusader trait is applied as soon as you lead a troop in the target area. I literally cycle all my commanders and myself through it when I'm there and we all get the trait instantly.

I agree that the text is quite unclear as things are, though, but the Crusader trait is irrelevant. Only the participation war score I mentioned matters.

Well, they need to do something different with this event. I had to come from the Norman area of France all the way to Jerusalem with a large army....that takes time. As it was I beat most of the AI armies there and MY beneficiary ended up with the Kingdom of Jerusalem.

So while the event may very well be working exactly the way it was implemented...I can't imagine it is working exactly the way it was intended. Which is the very definition of a Bug.

It gives you more time to reach the 0.1% participation score if you are further away.

I understand your upset at the way it basically screwed you over, though. How would you like to see it changed?
