Tributary State
Started an ironman game as the Duke of Benevento in 768! So I started the game as "independent" but have been paying tribute since the start of the game!

Its been tough but I managed to hang in and am King of Sicily now! However I am confused about the tributary thing!

There has been 3 Kings of Lombardy since I started paying tribute and thought if the suzerain dies I am free from paying tribute but seems I am missing something here?

How do I get out of paying them tribute? I have read up but not very clear how to get out?

Also I have a weak claim on the Kingdom of Lombardy which I can press as they have a 2 year old girl as queen now but I am not able to press this claim for some reason although it shows as a claim than can be pressed!!! Is this because I am tributary state of Lombardy?

Thanks

there are several different types of tributary relations in the game. some of them are only relevant for special cases, but feudal realms have access to 2 different types via the "extort tribute" and "establish tributary state" casus belli.

the former automatically ends when the suzerain dies; pays 40% tax and can be called into wars by the suzerain

the latter (that's the one you have) only pays 20% but doesn't end with the death of the suzerain. suzerain can't call the tributary into his wars, but the tributary can call the suzerain into defensive wars.

tributaries can only declare "free tributary" wars on their suzerain. all other CB agains the suzerain are invalid as long as they are tributary. if you declare and win a free tributary war, you are no longer their tributary.

you can also cancel the tributary status by decision if specific conditions are met (suzerain has negative prestige, suzerain refuses a defensive call to arms; suzerain realm size is smaller than tributary realm size. probably some other conditions i forgot.

Still a tributary state of Italy could have had the Kingdom by now :steamsad:

So when does the tick light up that you can demand stop being a slave lol! What is required? Do I need to be bigger than them?

This type of tributary has many ways to break free: if the suzerain has negative prestige, ceases to be independent, has a smaller realm size, or declines a defensive call to arms from the tributary state.

You can also declare war on your suzerain.
A faction for breaking free might also be possible.

Yes thank you I am aware of the ways to break the tributary but none of them has been possible! You cannot declare war on them other than to break the tributary when you meet the requirements it seems!!

But isn't that what you want ? To not be a tributary anymore that is.

PS: Sorry, i just saw that my post was superfluous as Azunai already mentioned this, but then i wonder why you asked your question in post #3....
The conditions for the decision are explained in Azurais and my post.

I do not want to keep on paying them 20% :steammocking:

My current King has a weak claim on the Kingdom of Italy and the last 3 rulers have been female but I cannot press any claims unless it is to break the tributary which has not been possible since I started the game!! :steamfacepalm:

Might have to plot your way to the Lombard/Italian throne.

Break the tributary first, only after that can you press any other claims...
Marcus Sep 3, 2019 @ 3:36pm
You cannot just break it!!!

Thanks for your info but one cannot press any claims against a tributary and the conditions as mentioned by you guys above has never presented itself! It is not possible to declare war against them other than breaking the tributary!!

I could have taken the throne but I could not press this claim it was greyed out and it was mentioned above the only claim one can press providing you meet one of the requirements, is to break the tributary!!

the way i see it you have basically 2 options
- you conquer some other territories so you can cancel the tributary relation peacefully once your realm is larger than the realm of your suzerain (may or may not be feasible, no idea how much larger they are)
- you declare your break tribute war, win the war and break free. if the kid is still a kid after the truce timer from that war is over, you can then press your claim against him. probably not. but at least you'll be free, so you will be able to pursue other opportunities in the future. maybe the boy has a younger brother as his heir for example... ;)
